There was disruption today to services between Sheffield & Chesterfield due to overrunning engineering work. Quite a number of EMR services to London was started at Derby.

Northern services particularly the 12:18pm from Sheffield to Leeds which started at Nottingham were being diverted, instead of coming in from Dore & Totley end it came in from North end via Lincoln Line.

There was also a mention on the Nation Rail app of a replacement bus between Sheffield & Chesterfield.

It was to do with the works at Dore, AIUI the up line remained open, so Sheffield - London services could run more or less normally - albeit very much subject to stock and crews being displaced. Various London - Sheffield trains terminated at Derby, or were routed via Beighton. An issue there being that not all drivers who sign to Sheffield sign the diversionary route (in particular no London drivers sign it).

There didn’t seem to be any onward replacement transport or ticket acceptance arranged from Derby; after arriving there earlier I overheard an announcement stating that the next Sheffield train was over an hour’s wait o_O.

They are now saying that it will last until the end of the day today. What happened?!
AIUI there were ballast renewal works going on, possession overnight 14/15th. Equipment broke down midway through the works and was stranded, works are now behind schedule and a speed restriction is in place for some services, possession was delayed due to engineering crew going over hours too due to breakdown

Others are running diversionary routes where crew knowledge allows and road transport is recruited to fill the gaps.

Latest update was line has been handed back but still incomplete so TSR in place and knock on delays from this and diversions to last the day (plus road transport on last full weekend before Christmas will be busy!)

If true, that's very shortsighted.
Rather like GW HSS drivers in depots in Devon losing route knowledge of Taunton - Bristol.
Crazy...

Beighton is slightly different to Taunton to Bristol. Taunton - Bristol has regular services all day, Beighton does not. EMR do run a small number of services via the route, these are used to maintain competency at the depots that do sign the route.

Seems quite a small thing for two whole days of disruption. Unless the equipment was a total failure and had to be rescued by a Chinook.

I can assure you it is true.

Indeed. EMR London men don’t sign via the Erewash valley or Castle Donnington either, which are two other occasionally useful diversions. There aren’t many London jobs that go all the way to Sheffield, so maintaining knowledge of those diversions would be more costly/resource intensive than it’s worth.

It’s bad enough trying to maintain knowledge over the Manton diversion without regular booked work over it (which London also lacks).

I do wonder how good an in-house simulator would have to be for it to be classified as the same a driving an actual unit over a piece of line? There would surely come a point where it would be possible but I'm unsure where that would be

There's 6 booked services (5 passenger and 1 ECS) over the Manton route daily Mon to Fri. I'm guessing they are all crew by Derby men, hence London not getting a look in?

They're shared between Derby, Sheffield and I believe Nottingham

It’s showing on RTT that the 1850 from Lime Street to Nottingham will be formed of 8 coaches Class 158o_O

It has happened recently, it was in another thread.

But on this occasion, it looks like EMR are stepping back units at Lime St, with one hours arrival forming the following hours departure, due to the delays.

So right now, the 1850 is showing as running with both the 172x arrival from Norwich and the 182x arrival from Norwich. With the latter not expected to arrive at Lime St until after 1850, I would imagine the 1850 will just be 4-158

EDIT 2028: in fact it looks like the 1850 did wait and is formed of 8-158 today

Curious to know how the works at Dore are implicated as trains on the Hope Valley line seem to be running OK. Only limited freight today and all running through Sheffield, none via Dore South.

Whatever the issue it seems to have caused continuing chaos.

Not sure the exact location of the problem, but when I passed late morning today, there was a top n tailed ballast cleaner and a couple of tampers/regulators on the down main line just north of Tapton Jct.
