I am certain I have found shorter (or maybe cheaper) than this. I’ll need to go back through emails ten years or more, but there was a short hop somewhere which I used to bag some big Amtrak Guest Rewards bonus without actually travelling...

Not cheaper, but Newark Airport to Newark Penn Station at $17 but 5 minutes journey time is around 3 miles.

Anaheim to Santa Ana, 5 bucks, 7 minutes, probably even shorter/cheaper ones around LA

OK, I'll play...

Boston South Station to Boston Back Bay.

1 mile. 4 minutes journey time.

Checking random dates on Amtrak.com, cheapest fare is US $7.00.

___

Or, New Haven Union Station to New Haven State Street.

According to Wikipedia milepost distance is 0.4 miles. Searching Amtrak.com, cheapest fare is US $1.00.

This is a low cost method of keeping your Amtrak Guest Rewards Points from expiring if you're in the area.

Some of those Amtrak routes-I suppose mostly in CAL, are ticketed locally to the fares of the local Bus/Lightrail/Commuterrail-system, or at least accept (some of) the local tickets/seasons. I guess the MIN fare AT itself charges is most likely 5 or even 7 US$.

My entries for short Amtrak trips that you can book around the country - Emeryville to Berkeley (about 2 miles), Santa Fe Depot to Old Town (San Diego) (less than 4 miles), Carlsbad to Oceanside (3 miles), Newark Penn Station to Newark Airport (about 4 miles) and Boston South Station to Boston Back Bay (less than 2 miles)

I made that journey in 2006 when Amtrak had their NE rail pass (which was incredible value for something like $80 for 4 or 5 days unlimited travel) and I remember the conductor telling me of the high price, which was purely to encourage passengers to use the NJ Transit services.

At my desk
Santa Fe Depot to Old Town San Diego.
About a mile and you can use one of the local passes.

I love some of the short trips rail passes allow! I remember frequently taking Shinkansen's between Tokyo and Ueno and Shinagawa and Tokyo thanks to my JR Pass!
