Should Liverpool Street be renamed - if so, to what?

London Liverpool Street is a right mouthful, and we know foreign visitors get mixed up, and end up on Liverpool trains at Stansted Airport. And v v .

And, I suspect, not just foreigners.

I don't know if it's been seriously suggested before, but despite the fact that I don't normally support such things, I think there has to be a good case for renaming the station, certainly to avoid the confusion caused by the word "Liverpool".

But what could/should the new name be?

Heaven forbid it becomes a 'sponsored' name station - London MacDonald's City or something awful like that. It should be relevant and permanent. Suggestions?

It's only a problem at Stansted Airport, and I thought it was dealt with (mostly) by showing the Northern city as "Lime St Lpool" on the PIS there?

Actually, thinking on, it's not even a problem there any more as there is no longer a direct Liverpool-Stansted service.

Established stations aren't usually renamed without a very good reason - and it is on Liverpool Street after all.

Would you rename Oxford Circus, Lancaster Gate, Essex Road, Holland Park? :)

But if it had to be renamed, Bishopsgate could be nice and unambiguous (until someone wants to go to Bishop's Stortford instead...)

I thought the problem was at Norwich and solved in the way you suggest.

Do any trains go from Stansted to Liverpool Lime Street?

I personally like "London Bishopsgate", but don't mind Liverpool Street as that's the street it's actually on.

Bishopsgate and Broadgate seem to be the oft-suggested alternatives.

It isn't just at Norwich and Ely that it's a (minor) problem. As it's not uncommon for stations in other countries to be named for the principal destination from that station (my phone clearly can tell I've said this before ) such as Moscow St. Petersburg and Paris Gare de Lyon, I imagine quite a few overseas visitors assume that Liverpool Street station is where you'd catch a train to Liverpool.

It has had his name for how long? But London Bishopgate or London Financial District might be better. Liverpool Street itself (the road) is pretty insignificant, especially when compared to Bishopsgate

I've had experience of this: a visitor from the Ukraine told my parents that she would arrive at Liverpool station at a certain time (& they then assumed it was via Liverpool airport) so I was asked if I could meet her there and get her south to the home counties... It soon dawned on me that she meant Liverpool Street station.

Of the two, Bishopsgate is better and the other one may not be accurately descriptive in a few years' time. :)

It really isn’t a problem. Let’s rename Oxford Circus in case it’s gets muddled up with Oxford!

There is no case to rename "London" Liverpool Street as the station is in London on Liverpool Street.

Afterall, even tourists know by visting Glasgow "Queen Street" or Cardiff "Queen Street" doesn't mean you will see the queen!!

Its merely a case of visitors being educated.

In the 80's Cambridge's direct service to London was to Liverpool Street and we had a once a day service to Liverpool Lime Street. The only tourists who would ask for the train to Liverpool and actually mean London Liverpool Street was the Americans.

Now, im not going to stereotype here, as i worked with an American who knew the world consisted of more countries than just USA, UK and Russia.

But when they voted in a certain funny haired tweeting President who probably gets laughed at by other nationalities, and they think he's the best thing since sliced bread.

Need i say more !?
Other than education.

As all other nationalities managed to ask for the London train as thats were they wanted to go!

I can top that, try explaining to two elderly Chinese/Japanese (I have no idea) tourists on the platform at Conwy who want to get back to their hotel in Betws Y Coed that they need to change at Llandudno Junction onto the Blaenau Ffestiniog train...

I soon remembered why I usually try to avoid being asked questions!
