as @Busaholic says, quite a range of Andrex: classic, gentle, quilt, supreme quilt and others.

As an aside, 'Little Duck' appears to be the replacement for 'Triple Softy Supreme' although Tesco simply deleted the latter from my favourites ie not even saying 'currently unavailable' or 'no longer stocked'. Hence why I did the analysis to find a replacement. However I noticed today that Triple softy has reappeared in my favoutites, at a new price of £4.88. Must stock up once I check the quantity.

As for kitchen towel, a bigger minefield for the unwary. Just how absorbent is it and how big a sheet do you need? Finger wiping after food or mopping up beer spills?

Some of those numbers are astounding. For reference I have Ecodoo 100% recycled toilet rolls, which are 450 sheets per roll.

That's fascinating detail and it's certainly much more useful having the cost per sheet than the net weight figure would be.

I'd be interested in where the kitchen towel I get comes in on the second table there; it's a large roll branded Springforce but I can't remember how much I pay for it...

Ah, my mistake, I prepared the table for my own purposes not expecting to publish it.

Springforce is a Tesco own brand. They are the less absorbant variety and, as far as I know, only come as a single roll - for 91p. I buy Springforce and Ultra for different purposes.

My usual brand disappeared from the Tesco website as 'no longer stocked' so I did an analysis for a suitable replacement.

CORRECTION. I've lost track of what I compared!
The kitchen towels compared are the heavy duty / ultra absorbant variety. The Tesco variety mentioned is Tesco Ultra, strong and absorbant 3 ply.
I don't have a comparison for lightweight kitchen towel as it has remained in stock.

That might be true for you, but not for my wife and myself. Weight can be an indication of quality, especially with kitchen paper. Regina type are absorbent, but the sheets are far too long for most purposes i.e. 50% longer than standard varieties, so you can waste a lot. Without going into unnecessary detail, my wife uses one roll of Plenty per day for medical reasons and I need good quality toilet paper with sufficient width several times a day too for my own medical problems. Why not include weight? A sheet is as long as a piece of string.

The Grauniad is today reporting on ‘skimpflation’, which is very much the same as shrinkflation, but extends across service provision, in the USA. Welcome to the modern world.

Which is what exactly?

A poorer / less complete service for the same price as the previously more comprehensive example.
We've gone so far down the same route in this country over the last twenty years or so I doubt there's very much scope left.

I suppose it includes things like hotels making rooms available at a later time than they used to, not (light) cleaning the room every day, providing fresh towels on request only ie skimping on service. No change to the basic goods/service that you receive for the same money but trimmed around the edges unless you ask.

Bus passengers have suffered this for years with the air conditioning / climate control turned off in summer and the heating turned off/down in winter.

Other examples would include banks etc offering reduced opening hours.

Some people might suggest that only providing 3 out of 5 trains, whilst still charging the same fare, is skimping. You still get travel from A to B, so the product itself is not reduced, but it is at reduced attractiveness / usefulness.

I purchased a 20p plastic bag at Tesco today and noted it was smaller than a couple of other Tesco 20p bags that I have.

Multipacks of Cheetos formerly 8 packs are now 6 packs. They're still charging £1, so I make that the equivalent of a 25% price increase. Actually, thinking about it, the lowest common multiple is 24, so 24 packs used to cost £3 (3*8) and now cost £4, (4*6), so that's a 33.33% price rise!

Youv'e been Cheetoed. :)

Maybe the change was some time ago but just today I noticed some bags of frozen vegetables I have are 900g not 1kg.

That is significant. I personally buy my shampoo in five litres at a time and have some refillable bottles kept in the shower. I initially did this to reduce my use of plastic bottles but now I recognise it as a way of getting some expensive shampoos that I like at better prices. But I don't know if you can get shampoos at that end of the market in such large bottles, and of course it requires a lot more capital up-front / access to low cost credit in order to buy in bulk.

Edit: a search reveals some shampoo that seems too good to be true at Superdrug: https://www.superdrug.com/Hair/Shampoo/TRESemmé-Deep-Cleansing-Shampoo-800ml/p/789951

I'm only interested in cheap bulk shampoos. The volume my wife uses has to be seen to be believed...

Three or four years ago, the supermarket shampoo would be 19p for a 1 litre bottle. With it now being 80p for half that, well... that's shrinkflation and a half!

The big tubs of sweets have been smaller for quite a while. I've got an empty Roses tin (when they were actually metal) in a cupboard and the net weight printed on it was 826g (850g with wrappers). I can't remember exactly when it was bought, but it has been in the cupboard for a few years now. I can't find the empty plastic Celebrations tub that I bought most recently, but I'm fairly certain it was less than a kilo too.
Bought two tubs just before Xmas for some US friends to take home. Given the need to pack them in a case I decided to see how many would fit in one tub. I am disgusted to say that BOTH tubs fitted into one for the journey home. Of course the weights will be clearly marked so nothing illegal, just that the impulse buyer will think hey thats a good price looking at the tub

Moral: don’t use shampoo. I haven’t used it for years for various reasons, including ethical and environmental ones, and my hair remains as healthy as ever.

I noticed the other day, that a tube of Pringles has gone from 200g to ~160g. They’ve lopped maybe 5cm off the height of the tube if you compare an old one to a new one

I think Pringles routinely have different pack sizes, maybe so that the "bargain" shops can then offer them at a seemingly discounted price point. Similar issue with the multi-packs of Walker's crisps which in larger supermarkets usually come in packs of six, but in discount shops often come in multi-packs of just four so that they can be retailed at an apparently bargain £1-00.

I have certainly seen in ‘bargain’ shops some packs that are different to those that appear elsewhere. The ‘four instead of six’ mentioned by Mcr Warrior seems to be a particular common one, but plastic pots that are taller but thinner, or fatter but shorter, than the usual size and contain less than the usual size are quite common. They are often still cheaper per ounce or whatever than the normal sizes, but a lot less than people assume.

Kellog's Corn Flakes at Tesco: were 450g for £1.63 or 36p per 100g. 'This product has been removed from our range, you could try' Kellog's Corn flakes: 500g for £2.00 or 40p per 100g. A bigger pack but a proportionately higher price per g. An 11.1% price increase. Last week they were 42p per 100g, a 16.67% increase.

Pack of four instore bakery bread rolls: were £1, now £1.10. A 10% price increase.

Colgate Toothpaste, now back in stock following some kind of spat. Offer price was £1.90 (never pay the full price), now £2.40, a 26.3% price increase.

And so it goes on.

@Baxenden Bank . Surely the examples you quote are of inflation, not shrinkflation. The latter would involve you getting just three bread rolls for your £1-00. Or four smaller sized rolls.

Yes, I got a bit carried away, and I don't think there is a growthflation thread - as in a bigger pack but even larger price increase. Same principle though - you get less for your money.

The bread rolls, recklessly labelled as large, have shrunk considerably, but as no weight is given it is impossible to know.

I understand that they have also changed their recipe so that they now include milk - now can't be eaten by those with milk allegies.
