I do believe this video was a reasonable factor in the decision, along with the fact that the train was wedged with cranks, many on staff passes, leaving no room for the actual punters at the out stations.

Difficult to know what to say to that, really o_O.

After that EMT had a clause inserted specifically into the Rail Staff Travel rules barring staff passes from any additional loco hauled trains they may choose to operate.

Not great, you’d expect staff to set a good example. I just hope the staff members weren’t exhibiting behaviour like in that video!!!

EMT hired top and tail 66s and coaches one year for summer Skegs. Central Trains used to hire in 47s and coaches. All normal ticket usually with revenue protection inspectors or guards on board undertaking revenue duties. EMT also hired in a 37 and coaches on the Crewe line once.

I'm not sure where this 'can't hire in trains' has come from.
Indeed.
At Blythe Bridge, 2013, not my picture.
Drivers strike if I recall.

So 'special circumstances' when the finer points of paperwork tend to get looked at later in favour of having something running, not ordinary relief.

To be fair, it's not just staff. Your stereotypical hardcore loco enthusiast, poking cameras in faces, shouting to their associates about "thrash" at an inconsiderate volume, changing seats from left of the aisle to right of it every five minutes, walking up and down the aisles filming, talking very loudly, tend to haunt these type of trains too and overall make the journey very tiresome. The very fact that HSTs tended to attract this clientele, particularly the GWML ones I found, are actually what caused me to start disliking HST operation. Then again, I suppose a major difference is that these crank-types have paid, but they're usually far worse than off-duty staff.

I used to keep the little lad in his pram by the doors at the end of the carriege when I needed to use these trains to and from Barrow a few years back. It was safer than letting a 2 year old roam around on the train with the seat swapping and filming and jostling round the gangway going on.

Looks like that guy in the video needs his belly tickling and putting back in the pram like a toddler btw.

What an idiot! When we had the loco hauled on the Cardiff Taunton and Paignton a few years back it was always full of strange characters.

Running extras from Grantham to Skegness, plus running buses direct to Butlins and the other holiday parks to the north of Skegness from Grantham/Peterborough is probably a lot cheaper than hiring in the HSTs and training drivers etc.
Maybe its easier for everyone to just close the line and use buses.

this is a madness situation and shouldnt be happening in 2023.

Does anyone have anything scientific, or even hobbistic to describe what i’m seeing there ?
