I want to make this journey via the WCML to meet up with a colleague in Crewe. As Hellifield is a routeing point I think I'm ok on shortest route except that this contains the leg Hellifield - Clitheroe which has no booked passenger traffic. Is the WCML a valid route and if so is Skipton - Lancaster - Euston valid because of the lack of trains via Clitheroe?

TIA

Vic

I've had a look on the NXEC site, and it suggests it's not allowed.

There is a SVR for £15 or a SDR for £13.50 between Skipton and Lancaster, but that means you have to get a ticket from Lancaster to Euston.

Skipton has 3 routeing points- Bradford, Hellifield and Leeds and a routeing point is only available to be used on yuour journey if the price from it to London is cheaper or the same as the price from Skipton to London.

Using Adult SVR fares :
Skipton to London- £83.60
Hellifield to London- £85.60 (Cannot be used as a RP)
Bradford to London- £79.90
Leeds to London- £79.20

So no you cannot go via the WCML using Hellifield as a RP!

Greetings all - my first post.

I take it you could use a Hellifield to London Saver Return at £84.50 (with the addition of a single from Skipton to Hellifield) for the outward journey? The price appears to be the same for travel from Hellifield to either EUS or KGX (or STP for that matter).

On the return it would then be permitted to break/terminate your journey at Skipton.

Yes, it is valid. On the return though, don't tell the guard that you are stopping short. ;)

However, you can't use the 0557 from Hellafield (arr Euston 1027) as this falls into the peak time bracket, so for that, you would have to get a cheap AP ticket if there is any left, or buy an open return.

Not NXEC, it's Virgin Trains.
You what?!

He said the NXEC site. He knows what website he is using. He is not using the Virgin-branded Thetrainline (which is not Virgin Trains' site, it is TTL's site which is simply branded red. In the same way that a tension sheet is packing paper painted red ;) )

All that said, neither TTL nor ATOS Origin (who run the NXEC site) are
authoritative on Routeing Guide matters anyway.

I did use a Hellifield -> London ticket so thanks. On the way back as I got the 1803 KGX - Ski the guard was more concerned about how I was going to complete my journey rather than me stopping short :)

Off topic & everything, but loving the Red Dwarf reference!

Glad the suggestion was useful! Break of or early termination of journey is permitted on either leg on the SOR, and on the return leg of the SVR, so there wouldn't have been a problem there. Nice to hear the conductor being concerned about the lack of an onward connection though :)
