My wife is applying for sleeper host role,she used to work for intercity as a hostess in the llate 80s,could anyone give us some information regarding the role with scotrail,the day in the life of,also what is the current shift pattern,pay,holidays,and any addittional perks,:D

Hi how are you.

I worked as a sleeper host for a few months last year (only left for a drivers position)

A night in the life of a sleeper host will consists of booking on at Euston, collecting your berth list and cabin labels, then having a good chin wag with fellow hosts (who are all really great people) when the carriages arrive you will venture down and begin to set up your coaches. This consists of opening and checking any booked berths and locking any non booked berths. Certain carriages need to be re labeled owing to the formation and you will check these inc toilets for faults and cleanliness. You can then begin boarding, checking people off as they arrive (you will be shown how to do ths but every developes there own patter) if your lucky all your bookings will be from Euston how ever you can have pick ups enroute. Once you have all your passengers you will take your drinks (standard) breakfast (first) to the lounge car and then assist the team leader with the running of the lounge. Once the lounge is clear of customers you are free to your own devices. Come the morning you will deliver drinks and/or breakfasts accordingly. On arrival at your destination you will check and secure cabins once everyone has left and then make your way to the hotel for breakfast and sleep. Depending on where you are you have time in the day to do as you please but we generally have dinner together before making our way to the station to do it all over again.

That's a very informal description if you require something more in depth I will template something this evening.

Pay was just over 22,000 not inc commission from ticket sales or London waiting if you qualify. I can't remember how much holiday was, you accrue 1/2 a day every month worked at first until you qualify for the full quota which I think is 28 days.
Rest days work out at sun mon the first week tues weds the second week and Thurs fri the third week (we don't work Saturdays) in a nut shell you get a long weekend every third week.

Additional perks really depends how you look at it. You can claim reward points for all the hotels you stay in, which is good as your not spending a penny. Life on the road can be fun and staying in hotels with all your food thrown in is nice. The scenery is stunning but first and foremost the crew are all really cracking people, you do become somewhat of a family and without being mushy I miss them all.

Thanks for the insight fella. This job seems interesting.
I was just wondering if you think its possible to commute from Coventry for this role?
Also, do you always do a maximum of 2 trips per week and do you earn much commision from ticket sales?

This interests me, as it doesnt comply with employment law, by law somebody working a 5 day week is currently legally entitled to 28 days per year, (obviously pro rata), some employers give more generous allowance
So the legal minimum to accrue for a 5 day per week employee is 2.33 days per month.
This starts accruing from the first day of employment
bank holidays should come out of these days if you dont work them but are still paid for them. so 8 annual bank holidays leave you 20 days (1.66 days per month) . If you work bank holidays you are entitled to a day in lieu for these days worked.

I didnt realise there is a calculator spent a few minutes working all my sums out myself :oops:
