Hello All

Having recently passed DM interview for Southern & I am going for a medical this monday and have been asked to fill out a backcheck for references etc. I was just wondering if anyone has been denied employment do to this?

There are some things I am worrying about nothing major but how in-depth do they go because on my CV I have extended the length on my jobs (only by a couple of months) just to fill the gaps in my CV which I'm sure many people do but just a bit worried as I've got this far. Also the fact I worked for British Telecom but can't get hold or find my managers details so therefore have to give a reference from 4 years ago but it is asking for the last 3 years? Have I got much to worry about? if anyone has gone through this with Southern it would be great to get some info on the process

Thanks in advance!

That's why you have to be truthful on the application - you might just go and get the job!

In all honesty, i'm sure you'll be fine. Put down the details you have and if there are any problems i'm sure they'll be back in contact. Southern are very short of drivers at the moment so I wouldn't worry too much!

Depends on what you have actual put on the CV. I'd expect any company to have both the joining and leaving dates on file, so if Southern were to contact one and ask to confirm that you worked with that company from X to Y, but they say something different, then you may have some explaining to do.

Hate to worry you but it is checked thoroughly.
I was advised my contract could be terminated hafway through training as either my former employer gave the wrong information ot back check asked the wrong question.

A responsible employer, which I'm sure will include Southern, will want to build up a picture of prospective employees and that will include reference checks. If there is a discrepancy between your application form and the information received back from previous employers, there is a very good chance that this will be picked up and you will be asked for an explanation.

It's also good practice to obtain references covering the last three years as a minimum. To be honest, if someone was appointed into a role with us, and seemed unable to proivde recent referee details, it would be regarded as suspicious. That said, we would look to obtaining a reference through the company HR department, if there is one, or from our own enquiries.
