You can't whack older units straight into full power as it's likely to trip the overloads. Mechanical sympathy means drivers usually work through the notches in sequence, or start in 2 and then into 4 around 8-10mph which may be what you experience. The jolt is particularly noticeable on an uphill gradient as sometimes in notch 2 it feels like the train won't move at all!

Yes, the driving style probably the issue here, Also if you are sitting in the rear of an 8 car itll be exaggerated by the slack in the couplers.

I try to hand notch where possible, dont want to be too rough on the old girls

Is that a 3rd rail thing as we regularly pulled away on full power with a 317?

They were thyristor controlled rather than camshaft and don't suffer from the slight delays you get with the contactors especially when you go from series to parallel. However, by far and way biggest contributor to jerking will be when drawing high currents and one of the units gets gapped.

I find the Southern 455s are noticably jerkier than the SWR ones, they seem far smoother with the new traction equipment.

455844 is back in service paired with 455801 today on diagram SL503/504. This had been stored at Selhurst for a while. Meanwhile 455830 is on SL519 having returned to service being stored at Hove

I remember a while ago (in the mid 2010s or so) there used to be one early morning Redhill to London 455 service and one early morning Sanderstead to London 455 service. I remember using both a few times and would like to take another ride on these journeys if they do still run. Can anyone confirm if these two journeys still operate with 455 currently? Or do the 455 no longer run these?

They are planned to be out on the Balham-Epsom Downs via Norbury circuit. London Bridge to Beck Jnc. Balham-Sutton via Palace.

It's a shame, but to be fair they are in their final days and many passengers won't get to see it.

A bit like last Saturday then. I'm not from the area any more but they used to be my staple commute, so I would like to photograph as many as possible before they go for good. Very sad eh?;)

One tidbit from the recently published Eversholt 'available stock' list - https://eversholtrail.co.uk/app/upl...able-for-lease-and-or-disposal-8-Apr-2022.pdf

The scheduled lease expiry date for the 455s now shown as 15 August 2022 rather than May in the last edition.

GTR keeping some around for a couple of months as standby? Or (more likely) the just need a period after the TT change to deactivate them and get them into storage?
