Hi. I was wondering where do the vic gaurds sign and the selhurst garden sign
Hi. I was wondering where do the vic gaurds sign and the selhurst garden sign
We must first ask ourselves what a "gaurd" is
"Selhurst Garden" sounds a nice depot.
We must first ask ourselves what a "gaurd" is
Thanks for thatSelhurst sign:
Victoria to East Croydon via Selhurst and via Crystal Palace
London Bridge to East Croydon via South Bermondsey/West Norwood and via Forest Hill
Above termini to Sutton via West Croydon and via Tulse Hill / Balham & Mitcham Eastfields
Sutton to Horsham via Dorking
Leatherhead to Guildford via Bookham
East Croydon to Brighton via Redhill/Quarry only (not Hove or Lewes)
Three Bridges to Horsham
South Croydon to Uckfield and East Grinstead via Oxted
+ Link 1 only will sign Clapham Junction / Tulse Hill to Milton Keynes Central and Stewarts Lane Depot
Some sign the Battersea Reversible and Chatham Main/Reversible to London Victoria, others only sign via Battersea Park - not link-dependent, strictly speaking, but mainly Link 1 & instructors
One or two still supposedly sign London Bridge - Brixton Junction via Denmark Hill but it's never relied upon now and not learnt by new folk
Other than Milton Keynes, both Links 2 and 3 sign all routes
Traction: 171, 455, 377
The big differences with Victoria are that Vic guards do not sign any routes to or via Sutton / Leatherhead. They also only sign 377s so do not work the Uckfield line (171s) or have diversionary knowledge via South Bermondsey. Victoria do, however, sign the route to Eastbourne (Selhurst do not sign routes off the Mainline via Lewes), sign Reigate, and work trains to Littlehampton via Hove or Arundel. There are other coastal bits here and there too.
Victoria guards do not pick up trains from Selhurst Depot [or any others] but Selhurst guards do. Selhurst do not sign the depot as such, but do have an extensive induction and full working knowledge of walking routes and siding locations.
Victoria and Selhurst guards do see a fair bit of each other on the East Grinstead route but not a lot else really. The two depots are classed as "Metro" so linked administratively to some extent. Victoria is a non-residential depot, meaning later starts and earlier finishes (or overnight work with shifts starting and ending during normal full service hours). Anything before around 0500 or after midnight often results in a cab home being paid for by the company, if the employee wants it. Selhurst guards have no such luck and start/finish shifts at almost any time, including 0200 finishes and 0300 starts, with employees having to get to work by their own means in the vast majority of circumstances.
Is that the same for the driversSelhurst sign:

There are a few "exceptions" to the rule, ie drivers who have gone up in the links, but kept their route knowledge upto date, or drivers that have transferred between depots, and some still retain previous route knowledge.
Redhill (RE):I guess Barnham, Brighton and Eastbourne do mainline work and coastal
I knew at least one link at Barnham knows 442s, was either Link 1 or Link 2.I was informed by a fairly reliable source the other day that Barnham has now moved to drivers signing 442 traction in Link 2 only.
Some of the trainee drivers at Norwood have worked with DIs who sign 171s, presumably just to keep up the driving hours, but won't be passed out to drive them until they learn Uckfield. Also, I believe some of the newer drivers at Norwood have done 171 courses even though they don't sign Uckfield until the top links; how true that is I don't quite know, as only one or two people have told me that, but presumably they'd have to maintain knowledge between London Bridge and East Croydon.
I knew at least one link at Barnham knows 442s, was either Link 1 or Link 2.
I was wondering when the statutory 442 mention would be made

Nope, the peak hour working to/from Eastbourne is worked by Brighton crews. While Brighton, Barnham, Selhurst (Link 1) and Victoria (Gatwick Express) drivers sign 442s, Brighton guards are the only ones who sign them.Don't Eastbourne drivers sign 442
