Hi there
What is a southern metro service please and how do I know if on one?
Was curious as to when to use first class if standard is full - as i thought you could on those services, but have never been to sure when it is ok?

Metro routes are marked in purple on this map. Think they're mainly operated by 455s and 456s though.

Note that on any train service if standard class is full and staff give you permission you can occupy first class with a standard ticket.

Southern are usually quite good at providing a message on the information screens saying first class accommodation can be used by standard ticket holders when a 377 is booked for a route with no 1st class.
