Well, it's certainly confirmed that the Redhill dock road is OOU - I arrived yesterday afternoon to find the track had been lifted!

I always thought that the Charing Cross services were mainly 377s? From looking at photos and videos online it seems like it was mainly 377s. Are the 455s even cleared to go on the Tonbridge and Reigate lines? I dont think i have ever seen them on these lines.

455s, 319s and the old EMU de-Icers used to OPPOS (out of gauge block the opposite line) through Bletchingly Tunnel for the timeline of this discussion.

Given the position of the controlled signals in the area (particularly on the Up at Godstone) as a last resort, and general timings on the line etc. etc., would I be correct in thinking that this could have been mitigated fairly well with a good timetable?

Even now, off-peak trains usually pass each other in the Edenbridge area.

You can't run out of out of gauge trains as a regular passenger service, as they need to be identified to ensure that nothing else passes them so they only ran that way as 5Xxx to and from Ashford Chart Leacon for Overhaul. The de-Icers had their own special code. When a out of gauge train was described from Ashford then T495 was maintained at danger on the down and when a down service was OOG then T508 replacement was used, you could also use the electronic ground frame release T770 for the up crossover points for Godstone ground frame to hold the signal (T508) at danger.

The regular working at the time was Wimbledon Park to Ashford Chart Leacon and the return working was the opposite as they were South West Trains 455s.
