Networkrail Scotland has Twittered a run down of services and speed restrictions due to adverse weather warnings. Is this the future?

Storm Alex - what used to be called Autumn before rebranding!
so you think weather warnings of high winds and heavier-than-usual-even-for-this-time-of-year rain should just be discontinued?

Is it now the case that an Amber warning of rain stops normal services?

Yes, till the lines are checked - or the warning is found to be overdone, which doesn't appear to be the case. Scotrail have said disruption till 1200, though Bathgate appears to be running.

That thread was deleted seemingly as it did not warrant a new topic so I hope this post is not deleted as not relevant as it expanded on weather to other reasons that show the combined impact at one place.
All those buses are due to scheduled engineering works and the line closure at Carmont.

A number of routes were closed this morning because of flooding - too many tweets to forward. Some have now reopened, but I believe that there's still flooding after Inverkeithing and at several locations between Aberdeen and Inverness. The preemptive closure was a good plan.

Now confirming landslips after Inverkeithing and after Kirkcaldy.

Don't be silly. Just give a weather warning. It doesn't need a cute name.

Why are we naming storms?

The naming of storms using a single authoritative system should aid the communication of approaching severe weather through media partners and other government agencies. In this way the public will be better placed to keep themselves, their property and businesses safe.

Feel free to take it up with the Met Office if you believe it not to be appropriate.

Storm Alex was named by the French and it has caused catastrophic damage in SE France and NW Italy.

And NR is now reporting that all Scottish routes have now reopened.

It looks like a light WCR 37 was pressed into action yesterday to survey some of the lines in the central belt.

37685 is currently parked in the siding just north of Larbert station

No. See the (sensible) explanation above. And nothing to do with Union Jacks either.
