Does anyone please know the quickest route from arriving on the train at St P (EMT) to getting onto a tube train on the Piccadilly line.

Arriving into St P on Thursday at 11.30am.

I only ask because since the 'renovation' of St P I seem to spend hours wandering around countless tunnels underground in order to get onto the Piccadilly line.

Thanks

Simple - come off the end of the EMT platforms, if you've only got hand luggage avoid the escalator and lift and walk to the stairs towards the end of the trainshed. Down the stairs, through the end of the trainshed and you're in the Underground concourse - follow signs for the Piccadilly line - which ISTR are the same direction as the Northern and Victoria lines.

Thanks AOwen.

But that route leads to the ten mile march underground, as often the first entrance to the escalators is blocked off.

Is it any quicker to go out of the trainshed by the side entrance and along to Kings X for example?

Don't think there really is a short-cut and I normally find myself doing the same at St Pancras!

The route I'd recommend is to double back on yourself at the bottom of the escalator, then turn right, straight ahead and down the escalator into the underground. Then you just have to walk through one underground tunnel to the tube ticket barriers and then just follow signs for the Piccadilly Line.

Hope this helps! Should take no more than 4-5 mins from EMT platforms.

From my experience of the labrynthine Kings Cross/St Pancras underground station "hours wandering around countless tunnels" is the quick way.

Much of a muchness. If you use the Northern ticket hall, you'll have to turn left and go along the long tunnel. If you want to use the Eastern ticket hall, you'll have a longer walk to get there in the first place.

I like a bit of fresh air after a journey, though, so I'd probably come down the escalator, turn left past Eurostar check-in, cross straight over towards King's Cross, walk round the outside of the GNH, then use the entrance by Euston Road. Turn right, straight down.

This should give you some idea of the complexity:

Not for the Victoria line, where it's definitely worth going where you're not meant to go (following signs to Metropolitan line). From being on an HS1 to being on a Victoria line tube is down to 5 minutes for me now. [If Southeastern would open more than 1 bloody ticket barrier it could be faster!]

For the Piccadilly line, the official signposted route via "hours wandering around countless tunnels" is probably quicker than following signs to Metropolitan line.

Many thanks everyone much appreciated.

As I'm old, I remember St P before it was 'modernised' and it seemed quicker to get to the Piccadilly line in those days. Maybe my memory deceives me !

Yes, there was an access from the south side of the concourse near the buffer stops, straight down to the subway into the Tube ticket hall. However the EMT platforms are now further north, further from either that or the new ticket hall under Kings Cross.

I always thought the quickest way from St Pancras to the Deep Level tube platforms was exiting St Pancras Intl below the Southeastern HS1 Domestics and walk across to the entrance by Kings Cross, though Kings Cross St Pancras Tube Station does involve a lot of walking to the Deep Levels, at least the SS Lines are simple to get to from both Kings Cross and St Pancras Intl

if you look at that 3D diagram, there's really not much difference in using the Northern Ticket Hall- you're covering a similar distance, just in the shed of St Pancras rather than the underground passages.

Viccy line is quickest via Southern Ticket Hall. As probably is the Picc.

I'd usually favour the southern hall from KGX or STP, except if it's for the Northern line.

What do you mean by "Southern Ticket Hall," are you referring to the Tube ticket hall?

Without a doubt, it's quickest to access the Victoria line via the Tube ticket hall, from all NR platforms (if you are entering from the street Pentonville Rd is good, when open).

From Kings + platforms 0-8, or the Eurostar, it is quickest to access all 3 Tube lines that serve the station via the Tube ticket hall.

With regards to the others for accessing the Picc & Northern it's a bit debatable. I tend to use the Tube ticket hall when coming from East Midlands' services, but the Northern when coming from Southeastern or platforms 9-11 at Kings +. The Northern ticket hall tends to be a lot busier than the Tube.

The walk to the Picadilly line is a long way whichever way you choose, it can be even worse if you alight your EMT train at the Northern end of the St Pancras platforms.

Returning from the Picadilly line to the EMT train such as the 2125 is difficult because the Up escalators are further away from the platforms, plus the 2125 is a twin 220 set with the quicker Leicester and Nottingham forward of the Derby set.
This can be made a little easier by exiting the tube at the Kings Cross exit and crossing the road and going through the Eurostar section to access the escalators.

A zebra crossing is badly needed between the Eurostar and Kings Cross. There usually seems to be mayhem here as is typical with dropoff and pickup areas.

They've put in a traffic island, which is a vast improvement on what was there before.
