Stamford to Inverness Delay repay - who do I claim from?

I’m after some help, my wife a ticket booked today to get from Stamford to Inverness for work.

First Leg from Stamford to Peterborough at 0902 was cancelled and looks like no train ran for the rest of the day on this section due to flooding. (Crosscountry)

Second leg from Peterborough to Edinburgh, train arrived 36 minutes late missing connecting train to Inverness (LNER)

Had to wait a further 44 minutes to catch a Train to Perth and change there for Inverness.(Scotrail)

Original destination arrival time was 1702, actual arrival ended up being 1829

My question is who do I claim delay repay from? Despite cancellation on the first leg of the journey, I drove my wife to catch the second leg of the journey rather than abandon from Peterborough to Inverness as she’s working up there for the week so she had to get there.

As you chose to start short, there is a chance of the claim being rejected by automated systems, which may deem XC at fault, due to their train being sufficiently delayed to miss the connection.

However, in this case, given you started short at Peterborough, I would say to claim from LNER, as your actual journey did not involve XC, so you cannot claim from them.

Thanks Yorkie for the information, it’s a tricky one to suss out as we had no train running at all between Stamford to Peterborough due to cross country cancelling them all, so had no option but to get her to Peterborough in time to catch the connecting train to Edinburgh.

It's not a case of there being "no option", but if her arrival time was crucial, and you had the ability to start short at Peterborough, then of course, you can do so.

I understand why that would be seen as a "no brainer" given you had the means to do that, but it must be borne in mind that taking such action does change the liabilities, when compared to someone who is entirely reliant on the rail industry to provide alternative transport.

This gets XC off the hook, who would otherwise be required to provide replacement transport and/or pay delay compensation, as appropriate.

I've put start/finish shorts in before by just putting what I actually did (usually involving Bletchley on an MKC ticket or vice versa in the other direction). On odd occasions I've had to explain why it was valid but usually it's just been paid.

Curiously I also had one sent from Northern to Avanti when I did make it in time to make the Northern connection (which was cancelled), but only just. But Avanti paid it so I don't mind.
