I'm looking to travel from Tottenham Hale to Cambridge on Saturday 31st August in the morning. However I want to return to London Liverpool Street probably Monday late afternoon/evening...

I know there is a Greater Anglia service from London Liverpool Street to Cambridge that stops at Tottenham Hale... So is it possible for me to buy an off peak return from London Liverpool Street to Cambridge, but still be able to hop on the train at Tottenham Hale on my outward journey?

I get too paranoid for my own good and don't fancy getting told off

Thank you!

I don't know of any 'Break of Journey' restrictions on that ticket, so you should be fine.

Thanks.

Does anyone know if there are barriers in operation at the train platforms of Tottenham Hale? It's been a while since I've been there and I guess would make my life easier with the different ticket...

No barriers, occasional ticket check blockades BUT your ticket is valid regardless.

(and absolutely every Liverpool Street-Cambridge train calls at Tottenham Hale unless there's engineering/emergency diversions when they go via and call at Seven Sisters)

Not according to National Rail Enquiries. If there are though, you shouldn't have any problems being let through if the ticket doesn't open the barriers.

Remember that you won't be able to buy that ticket from the machines, you'll have to go at a time the ticket office is open, or buy the ticket in advance.

I know people who break their journey at Tottenham Hale all the time using tickets between Liverpool St and Cambridge. No hassle at all doing that there

There are no ticket barriers at the National Rail platforms at Tottenham Hale. There are ticket barriers at the Underground station, some 20 metres away. How do you intend to get to Tottenham Hale National Rail station? If by public transport, what ticket(s) do you intend to use?

Bus to Walthamstow Central, and then the Victoria line to Tottenham Hale - with the help of the good old oyster card.

Sure ok, I'll buy online and will use the ticket machines at Walthamstow Central to pick up the tickets :)

Have you considered buying a return ticket Walthamstow Central - Cambridge?

Assuming you do not hold any Railcard, the outward leg Walthamstow Central - Tottenham Hale - Cambridge would takes the route of a £30.80 Off-Peak Return Walthamstow Central - Cambridge route ✠ Not Via London. This is valid by any train on a Saturday and can be used for the tube journey Walthamstow Central - Tottenham Hale, then the train journey Tottenham Hale - Cambridge.

For the return leg Cambridge - London Liverpool St - Walthamstow Central, the appropriate route is valid with a £39.30 Off-Peak Return Walthamstow Central - Cambridge route ✠ Any Permitted. This allows return travel on a Monday by any train due to arrive London Liverpool St at 1000 or later. After completing whatever you need to do near Liverpool St, the ticket remains valid for one train journey London Liverpool St - Walthamstow Central, at any time on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays, and on other days by any train due to arrive London Liverpool St between 0930 & 1628 (inclusive) and at or after 1835.

You can excess the £30.80 ticket to allow travel on the return leg only by the route of the £39.30 ticket. This costs half the difference, that's £4.25, making the total cost £35.05 for your Walthamstow Central - Cambridge return by the routes you want.

This should save you money on Oyster fares because Walthamstow Central - Cambridge fares are the same price as Tottenham Hale - Cambridge fares.

We have had some reports of some inexperienced ticket office staff not being trained in the procedures for issuing an Excess fare. If I were you, I'd try at each station ticket office and with each member of on-train staff until you are successful. Do tell us how the journey goes, please.
