Hi guys, need urgent advice re; journey from Stourbridge Junction to Birmingham International
I am convinced it is quicker and easier to change at Smethwick Galton Bridge, get on a train to New Street and then hop on any train going towards Birmingham International?

Question is, am I allowed to do this? I don't want to get in trouble but I want the cheapest and easiest way of doing this journey

On Trainline it says
"Valid only for travel via (changing trains or passing through) Birmingham."
I don't really understand that to be honest

Any help appreciated

That means your train has to go via Birmingham or you have to change there. Which is what you are proposing to go - you're fine :)

Brilliant thankyou - it doesn't matter that the train operating company might be different?
EG it would be West Midland Trains from Stourbridge to Smethwich Galton Bridge
But then I could get on an Avanti West Coast service at New Street heading to Euston (but stopping at Birmingham International) and this would be ok?

Similiarly it might be an Arriva Trains Wales service I get on from Smethwich - New Street and this would be fine too?

This is fine, unless your ticket a specific operator restriction stated on the ticket, eg WMT only.

Although note that transport for Wales no longer call at Smethwick Galton Bridge - only WMT and a limited Chiltern Service.

The only trains that go directly from Smethwick to Birmingham International (that I can find) are two WMT trains late night on Saturdays - outside of that you will have to do as you mentioned and change at New Street.

Do bear in mind that unless you really need to change at Smethwick Galton Bridge SGB eg: to use the lift, or have bulky heavy bags, it's almost always quicker to go to Birmingham Snow Hill BSW and walk down to Birmingham New Street BHM. This is because there appear to be some quite lengthy changes at SGB these days. If getting a plane this is what I do but I only ever have a small pull along case.
