Not good. I didn’t realise the politics on the railway were that bad. Let’s hope the railway survives this. At least it is at the end of the season and not mid summer.

For completeness:

Mass walk-out by staff and volunteers at Strathspey steam railwayThe operation of the Strathspey steam railway has been thrown into turmoil after a mass walk out by staff members and volunteers.

They are deeply unhappy with the running of the popular heritage railway which links Aviemore and Broomhill by Dulnain Bridge.

Matters came to a head at a meeting at the Cairngorm Hotel in Aviemore on Tuesday night when a vote of no confidence in 'certain members of the board' was put before the bosses but they refused to stand down.

Some 41 people closely connected with the running of the railway have put their name to the motion which has been seen by the Strathy.

It reveals a host of complaints made against the railway's directors including allegations of bullying and staff safety failings

The railway has not been running today with the railway company citing the weather caused by Storm Babet.

However, sources told the Strathy that this was a convenient excuse and have said that the long term future of the railway could be at stake if the present board does not stand down such is the dissatisfaction.

It is understood that the problems are long-standing and not connected with the recent accident involving the Flying Scotsman but one of the unhappy railway workers pointed out: "It has certainly not helped".

In the letter of expression of 'no confidence', those who have walked out cite:

• a lack of respect for all staff;

• a lack of leadership;

• a lack of forward planning and vision;

• the inability to follow company policies;

• the inability to deal with staffing issues and management;

• failure to seize positive opportunities for the benefit and the future of the railway;

• intense micromanagement; and

• a lack of communication.

The steam railway's website states that no trains are running today because of the adverse weather but staff who have walked out claim this is not the real reason.
They state in the letter of no confidence: "This has led to what we feel is a compromise of our safety and a deep decline in staff morale.

"It has further led to a hostile environment resulting in staff leaving or wanting to leave, working contracted hours only and not having any goodwill towards the railway.

"The railway heavily relies upon staff's goodwill to operate the way you want it to.

"We request the following as minimum to satisfy this letter - the resignation of the whole board.

"We have plans in place to cover the required positions, ensuring a stronger board to carry the railway forward into the future.

"No workforce should have to come to this decision, however, we deem it to be in the best interests of the railway."

The Strathspey steam railway's timetable is still showing scheduled services are to run until the end of this month with the next operations being this weekend.

The Strathy has contacted the Strathspey Railway Company Ltd for a comment.

This article on the financial effect of the Flying Scotsman mishap on the Strathspey also interestingly refers to this season's Santa Specials being "currently on hold pending a review of the availability of staff".

Is it possible that the hold, which has been known about for 2-3 weeks, is being attributed to staffing uncertainty rather than to the scope of an investigation?

If you're suggesting RAIB have prohibited operation of the Santa Specials, it would make no sense for them to allow the railway to run at all in the interim.
More likely cash/staff uncertainty as stated

RAIB are an investigatory body, AFAIAA they do not have the power to shut the railway - that is down to ORR.

It’s not within the powers of the RAIB to prohibit any kind of activity. That would be the ORR’s purview.

The company's reply to the attack by a few members is printed in the Strathspey Herald.

Yes the vast majority of whom are still working. A handful left the meeting with a hail abuse and swearing and threatened to shut the railway down.

UPDATE: Strathspey Railway Company chiefs respond to allegations of bullying and harassment

The board of the Strathspey Railway Company Limited has provided a lengthy response to allegations made by some of the company’s employees and volunteers.

The operators of the Strathspey steam railway have responded to allegations made against some board members.
It appears in full and as submitted below:
The Strathspey Railway Company (SRC) is a 'not for profit' company set up in 1971 to own and operate a heritage railway between Aviemore and Grantown-on-Spey.
Currently it runs a seasonal service between Aviemore and Broomhill using a combination of paid staff and volunteers.

The SRC currently has 318 Shareholders including the Strathspey Railway Association (SRA) which owns 44 per cent of the share capital.
The Strathspey Railway Association (SRA) was formed in 1972 and is now a charitable company for supporters of the Strathspey Railway providing grants and loans to it and associated entities.

It also owns a significant shareholding in the SRC. It currently has approximately 840 members and is run by a board of trustees.
The SRC board first became aware of concerns being expressed about their management of the Railway shortly before the company’s AGM on 9 September.
They were advised that a petition was being circulated amongst paid staff and active volunteers which contained a number of general and unsubstantiated allegations, an expression of no confidence in the board and a demand that they resign immediately to allow a new board to be appointed to run the company.
At no time was the board formally approached for a meeting to discuss these concerns.
Notwithstanding and recognising the strength of feeling being expressed by, an at the time an unknown number of people, a joint meeting was held on 9 September between representatives of the SRC and SRA boards.
The SRA trustees tabled a list of concerns and suggestions for changes to the way the railway was run and managed which were generally thought to mirror those of those signing the petition.
It was agreed by all parties that certain changes were required as reflected in an outcomes document which was widely circulated via the SRC internal communications distribution list.

Shortly after that meeting and notwithstanding the agreement reached between the SRC and SRA, it became apparent that staff both paid and volunteers were still being urged to sign the Petition demanding the SRC Board’s immediate resignation.
As the petition had still not been seen by the SRC directors, steps were taken to find out who was responsible for trying to undermine the SRC board and to interfere with a process already agreed with the SRA board.
This resulted in an SRC director asking a member of staff about the petition and who was responsible for its instigation.
As a consequence, the petition, which had been signed by 42 paid and volunteer staff, was finally made available.
This resulted in a grievance being raised against the director who was accused of bullying and harassment in attempting to find the origin of the document.
Whilst the director does not accept the accusation the matter is currently the subject of an investigation in accordance with the company’s bullying and harassment and grievances policies.
Accordingly, it would be inappropriate for the company to comment further on this matter at the present time.
Company takes very seriously any allegations of bullying and harassment
The company takes very seriously any allegations of bullying and harassment and if any such allegations are brought to the attention of the board they will immediately investigate and take whatever actions are necessary.
One outcome of the meeting on 9th September was agreement that the SRC and SRA would jointly convene a meeting of all staff and any others interested to allow them to contribute to the change process agreed by the boards on 9th September.
The meeting was also designed to allow those who had signed to petition to elaborate and substantiate their concerns but more importantly make constructive suggestions as to the sort of changes they would like to see.
Prior to the start of the current running season a meeting for all paid staff, volunteers and supporters of the railway was jointly hosted by the SRC and the SRA on 18 March 2023.
A series of presentations was given on all aspects of the railway together with plans for the coming season.
This included an open forum to allow for questions and was an opportunity for those attending to raise any concerns they may have had about the way the railway was being managed.
Questions were asked but none related to the allegations now being made against the SRC board.
To help demonstrate impartiality the meeting held on Tuesday 17 October 2023 was chaired by an SRA trustee with no direct involvement with either the staff or the management of the SRC.
The director outlined the agenda and then showed a simplified view of the present finances.
This showed a worrying deterioration in the cash flow projection.
There has been a loss of income as a result of the Flying Scotsman incident and
subsequent cancellations amounting to a six figure loss in refunds to passengers.
This, together with the seasonal Santa Express, currently on hold pending a review of the availability of staff could further affect the railway’s finances.
What should have been the best year ever for the Strathspey Railway family has turned into one of the worst with allegations circulating throughout the railway regarding discipline and financial mismanagement.
A spokesperson for the ‘group’ who want change at the railway made unsubstantiated claims of harassment and bullying at the railway which the directors of the SRC vigorously deny.
He did not address the severity of the financial position of the business’s cash flow projection and ended his time with the statement that ‘if the ‘group’ don’t go away tonight with the answer they demanded, they will be leaving’.
He concluded by saying that the only real purpose of the meeting should be to hold a vote of no confidence in the board which if won would require the entire board to resign and new directors appointed from an unspecified list of names.
Although the spokesman was advised of the correct procedure for removing and appointing directors, he insisted on a vote which resulted in a majority of those in the room voting that they had no confidence in the current board.
Looking for a resolution
Following further discussions in the room it is clear that there are issues which the board requires to address including general management of the railway and the appointment of a human resources representative to ensure that both volunteers and employees have an independent person they can talk to about any issues at the railway.
Retired businessman Dave Childs said that the volunteers, employees and the volunteer run SRC board require more time to consider and resolve the differences in the issues raised at the informal meeting.
As a successful businessman he understands the issues with the present financial position of the company and knows the solution is to find common ground and to move forward with an agreed business plan which may include some changes on the SRC board.
At the end of the discussion period the SRC board directors who were present were asked if they intended to resign.
When the directors said they would not, citing that this was not correct company procedure, two of the employees walked out.
The spokesperson who is not a volunteer but a paid member of staff and who is neither a member of the SRC or the SRA, also walked out followed by a few others.

The meeting then ended with various informal discussions between volunteers and employees.
The board is willing to sit down and discuss the way forward and acknowledge the need for new people to join the board which will then allow longer serving members to step down.

Has there been any movement on this? I’d hate to see their Christmas trains go down the pan and lose valuable income. Surely it’s it’s in the interests of the volunteers to support this and not risk losing their railway?

The Santa trains have been cancelled, last I heard they were keeping the door open for the ‘Mince pie specials’ but nothing confirmed yet. Big financial loss to the railway in any case.

That’s a shame. In the national RMT/ASLEF dispute the railway will still be there at the end,will the Strathspey?

It's disheartening to see such a passionate group of staff and volunteers reach a point of contention that affects the operation of the Strathspey Railway. The walkout underscores deep-seated issues that go beyond the immediate financial and operational challenges brought on by the Flying Scotsman incident. It seems clear that both sides are deeply invested in the railway's success, yet communication has broken down somewhere along the line.

The Strathspey & Badenoch Herald has an updated story on this and a rescue plan. Resolution is complicated by the relationship between the Company and the Association and charitable status.

See; https://www.strathspey-herald.co.uk...ashed-out-to-salvage-strathspey-steam-332602/

The article is too broken up with ads to easily quote!

Text of the article:
A rescue plan is being put together to ‘salvage’ the Strathspey steam railway operation, the Strathy understands.

The Strathspey Railway Association – the largest shareholder in the Strathspey Railway Company – held its AGM a week ago in the Boat Hotel in Boat of Garten.

There were around 63 members in attendance and the meeting was held in private.

The heritage railway has recently been hit with two major setbacks potentially putting its future at risk.
The world famous Flying Scotsman was involved in a collision on the line at Aviemore at the end of September which resulted in two people being injured and a six-figure loss in income and an insurance claim to be dealt with.
Then last month there was a walk-out by some key staff and volunteers after the SRC’s directors refused calls to stand down amid allegations of bullying and poor management.
A source, who did not wish to be named, told the Strathy earlier this week: “The association made it quite clear at the AGM they would not bail out the company and that they would not give the company a loan as they could not justify it as a charity.
“However, they have a plan in which they hope to rescue the company.
“This plan is to be discussed between they two boards within the next week.
“The SRC representatives stood up and said their bit.
“They have said that the company board will not appoint any new directors until a plan has been made to rescue the company.
“Despite the claims that the Flying Scotsman incident has caused the Santa Express to be put on hold a member asked what is happening with the Christmas train. The response was ‘we’re working on it.’
“Despite being in November they still don’t have an agreed and finalised plan for the Christmas trains.”
The SRA said in a statement issued to the Strathy after the AGM: “Our members were anxious to receive updates from the SRC about the incident with the Flying Scotsman in September and the current problems with the business.
“These were made by two officers of the company who are also members of the association.
“The updates were welcomed by the members present before we moved on to other business.
“The association does not of course play a direct role in these matters, and is guided by OSCR (Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator) in the way it can support the railway being also the company’s largest shareholder.”
The latest SRA accounts also show there is a contingency fund already to support the railway.
It states: "The association has set aside £60,000 in a designated fund intended to safeguard the Strathspey Railway against the risk of closure and the loss of heritage assets."
The Strathy has asked the SRA and the SRC for a comment on the rescue plan.

How does the salary offering equate with similar positions at other heritage railways? It seems fairly low, but then obviously based on what can be afforded.
Looks like a pretty poor deal from a general sense. Low amount of AL (21 days + BHs), 37.5 hours a week and then in the next sentence basically saying you will have to work more than that with no overtime/time in lieu specified. Even at 45k that's 20k off what I'd see as 'good value'. Not sure how they're expecting to hire quality with that offer, especially from other industries which will very likely have better terms & salary for similar level positions.

That is a real no in my book, got stung once a lot of years ago, never again. Overtime was expected, I stuck it 3 weeks then told them I was off, in more colourful terms. It wasn't in the rail industry, but same thoughts apply.

The problem seems to be that the business needs the right calibre of person, but cant afford it. That will not end well.
