Switch paper travelcard to Oyster travelcard?

I have recently moved to London and have just done a changeover from a normal non-travelcard annual season ticket (OXP-MYB) to a paper zone 1-2 travelcard (it actually says from:CHX to:London Z1-2).
The ticket office said I couldn't get the travelcard on an Oyster, so in the interests of time I agreed to having it on paper.

Are they right? Or is there any way I could switch it to Oyster?

It could have been loaded into Oyster at staff discretion if you had done the changeover at a National Rail office that issues Oyster products. Charing Cross is not such an office.

Hate to burst everyone's bubble, but there is no way to transfer a paper Travelcard to Oyster...at least not at stations where FasTIS is the primary ticket issuing system. Trust me...I've tried it. Nor is it possible to do a changeover from a paper ticket to Oyster, though Oyster to paper can be done.

There's a small chance that it may be possible at stations that use Tribute, Shere SMART or Fujitsu STAR as the primary TIS, with a non-revenue FasTIS for Oyster transactions. However, if it is possible, it's likely to involve a refund and reissue if the paper ticket wasn't issued at that station.

I would take a guess that at Watford Junction, when we used to do Oyster transactions, we would issue the paper Travelcard as normal and then insert it into the FasTIS machine... and I am reasonably certain it would have accepted the changed-over ticket as a normal period Travelcard. However it would have then probably not prompted to print a Gold Card Receipt...

This is all a guess as it never happened in practice, and we unfortunately got rid of the Oyster equipment a long time ago
