Did someone try to enter a route code, followed by a "/0"?

(The attached file shows a Class 450 on a Dorking service on 14th June, with the display showing "NAN")

Not so sure about this statement, if you are standing on the up platform at Fratton for instance the trains could be heading for any number of destinations in addition to Waterloo - in fact Waterloo is the minority destination, try Southampton, Brighton, London Victoria, Littlehampton or even Cardiff for instance !
There are relatively few places on the SWR network where that is the case though - certainly once you are past Basingstoke, Havant, or Epsom the train is unlikely to be going anywhere other than Waterloo

Route numbers are useful for everyone, provided that stopping patterns are consistent and the route numbers are deployed on all information sources and remain consistent for as long as possible. However, it’s the sort of thing those pesky continental Europeans do, so of course it’s a non-starter here.

Numbers are also routinely displayed on GWR Turbos in the Reading area, as part of what I assume was originally the same system? In these modern days of LED screens it’s difficult to find a decent photograph, but they appear alongside the written destination - 01 is Reading to Basingstoke, I believe.
