I am curious to know: If someone else was in the OPs position, what is likely to happen to them? I am under the impression that if they have a valid ticket then the worst they would get would be a slap on the wrist and a small telling off. Not all byelaws seem to be enforced very strictly these days.

The OP shouldn't have done it but presenting a valid ticket after tailgating makes implementing the byelaw equally pointless. You're even I suppose.

Don't get me started with muppets with the wheelie luggage cases who stop at the bottom/top of escalators/travelators to simply retract or extend their handle and create a crush behind them. The problem is that most of them don't really what a menace they are. Manchester Airport have the right idea to be fair that Network Rail need to start implementing at their stations.
There were structures like that at Luton Airport Parkway when it first opened but they had to be removed because people struggling to get their suitcases past them caused so much congestion. Now there is only the problem of people stopping to faff about with handles!

Interestingly, when I am travelling with my wife and one or both kids, the Underground staff encourage us to go through the wide gate "because it'll stay open long enough for you all to get through with one of the tickets".

In addition to my antics at ticket gates regularly walk straight past Northern's security guards. I like it when they catch my eye, I put my hand in my pocket and then I smile and walk past them saying good morning.

I've got a season ticket of course, but I've had a few bad experiences with them so won't go out of my way to produce a ticket unless specifically asked.

I ignore these signs at Manchester Airport. Handles are left extended on the escalator, one simply keeps a hold of the suitcase and walks off at the top. I believe the signs are there to stop people letting go of their cases to tumble backwards onto people below (which I have witnessed on the Tube in the past).
