Hello everyone,

First of all, I’m not looking to find out the answers to any tests, I just want to query something.

I haven’t even been told I’ve been short listed and yet one of the tests seems to be making me really anxious and that’s the beep and phone book test.

I understand the first part of it is counting the low pitch beeps and it’s filling me with dread. I’ve been looking at examples online and they seem SO fast that it’s almost impossible to count them in your head without tripping up the first time. These are the examples I’ve seen:
and https://traineetraindriverinfo.com/low-tones-test-track-1/

Some people in the comments have said that it’s nowhere near as fast in real tests and there isn’t as many beeps as in these two examples. Could someone clarify that?

Again, I’m not looking to find out the exact number of beeps, I just more want to know whether it really isn’t as difficult as the above examples.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

It’s really not that fast .. but don’t forget after doing the bleeps and then the phone book test .. you’ll then do them both at the same time!!

I had the same worry.

In the real test, the beeps are spaced apart well enough that they are easy to count. I vaguely remember that part of the test is counting the low tones in a mixture of high and low tones, and that the low tone will always come first.

Imho, trickiest part of the test is counting the tones while searching for symbols. Sounds difficult but if you've got the skills for train driving, it should be easy enough to multi task both tasks.

I've done this test and passed.

The beeps are continuous (ie there's not much time in between each beep) but it is easy to tell which ones are which as the first beep is always a low beep.

You can either use your fingers as some did but I found it easy enough just to count in my head.

The phone book aspect is incredibly easy. They give you symbols to look for. Circle those symbols and ignore everything else.

I did this test recently and passed. It is most definitely nowhere near as daunting as I thought. I think as long as you know 100% what you're doing and keep a cool head then you should be able to manage just fine.
