I also sat the assessment centre test on Tuesday and can confirm that it is only the matching pairs that you are looking out for. I found this easier than the other examples. The other examples like in the youtube video are still useful though as a practice tool.

Wonderful. How was your assessment gone? Any tips for trainability test (reading test and memory) and fault finding!

Its quite a difficult one to prepare for as the text will prob change for each assesment. You are given paper to take notes during the reading time. They will also play a recording of someone reading out the info. I found it most useful to listen fully to the passage being read out before taking the notes as I found that this was the best way to absorb the info. Obviously you need to try and stay as composed as possible and don't dwell too long on your answers.
Prior to the assesment the only thing I had to go on was the information pack stuff and I still managed to get through so it can't be that bad!

Ok. How many texts and what is the time limit to answer per statement?

It was just one page of text. It is taken from the Rules and Procedures book. As I said it was read out aloud. You were given 5 minutes (I think) to make notes. You are then given 7 minutes (i think it was 7) to answer 18 Multiple choice questions. Your notes and the text are obv taken away at that point and its really a case of trying to remember what the correct answer was. Some of the multiple choice answers are very similar so I was quite specific when making my notes as this helped to retain the information. The time flies past for both the reading and answering so concentration is key.

Ok Thank you...Any tip/s for fault finding. Examples are quite easy. They mentioned in actual test there are cables, I assume it would be pic of cables and is it 15 questions in 45 minutes?

Hi just read this thread so basically for the tea test you have to ignore the profession and ignore the area codes and just circle the matching pairs of symbols only.

Is this because the error codes and profession will all be the same, so every entry in the phone book will be a Plumer and all with same area codes ?

Thanks

Does anyone know if the tea test there is a pause /interruption in the third part after every few tones ?

So you save images and count tones then the examiner pauses you and you write down the number of tones and then the test carries on with further pauses/interruptions?

Thanks

Yes they play a recording of a series of high/low tones whilst you search the phone book for matching symbols. After each series of tones, you quickly jot down on a separate piece of paper, what ‘floor’ or how many high tones did you count. Think there was 6 maybe 7 sets of tones to listen to whilst searching the phone book. I didn’t find it as difficult as I thought it was going to be, just make sure you fully understand before you start, and don’t be afraid to ask any questions. The opc are there to help you mate.

Thanks for the reply, so it’s high tones we looking for not low?

This is what I found on another thread and it mentions on part 2 to look for matching postcode aswell as matching symbols

Part 1 required us to listen to beeps (some with low tones, others with 'high' but I'd call them moderate-to-low). You will need to count just certain tones (can't remember if it was low or high). An example is available here, but there weren't so many tones for each question: https://traineetraindriverinfo.com/low-tones-test-track-1/
Part 2 required us to do some simple telephone directory work. I think it was finding companies in a particular trade with a rating of three stars and with a phone number with a particular area code. It wasn't rocket science and probably doesn't need much practising, but it is designed to make you work quickly. You might not finish and don't need to.
Part 3 was the hardest, combining both part 1 and part 2. You hear number 1 read out and a number of beeps (only one tone this time). You need to write the number down when told. This continues. At the same time, you have a telephone directory task similar to part 2. You are told that both parts are of equal importance. You must use different pens for both tasks. When doing it, I got a good sense that I was truly multi-tasking. It's a good test, actually!

I sat this test few days ago and failed. I had read this thread and matched all the matching symbols on both part 2 and 3 of the test.

I used the train driver info software and was getting 100% on the directory search and interruption test.

The tea test I had prepared the most for and not really sure how/why I failed. The feedback from the examiner was I did not do too well in part 3.

Part 1. was was okay but I’m sure I got 1-2 wrong because on my answer sheet I had 2 same number for which floor the lift was on. The examiner did say the lift is always going up not down. Started of on 2 beeps and by 7th set of tones was on about 12

The second part I completed most of the sheet and only looked at the matching symbols. I didn’t even bother to look at the phone numbers or anything else. We was shown a laminated paper with about 4 symbols one being a star shape. But not sure if there was any other shapes now that was not on the card.

Part 3 I got to the end of the sheet finding the matching symbols. But again not sure if each time in asked what floor of the lift was supposed to go up each time

Either I must have missed some shapes or not counted correct amount of tones. But the examiner said they not allowed to say.

The 3rd part of the test I should imagine from what your saying, you must have counted the tones incorrectly.
If memory serves me correctly, there was 6 maybe 7 sets of tones to count.
If the 1st set of tones there are 5 high and 2 low tones. The answer is 5.
If the 2nd set of tones there are 3 high and 4 low tones. The answer is 3.
And so on and so on.

Until you get to the ‘lift counting with reversal’ which Network Rail previously used for signallers....

Hi all, my first time posting here.
This site is goldmine and thank you to all who have offered there information and advice, it really does go a long way.

Now forgive me if this question sounds silly but my question is in referral to the advice given to focusing on the matching symbols.

Do the matching symbols you are looking for have to pair up alongside one another? e.g 374748/+** or anywhere for e.g 374345*+^*.

Ive probably gone and baffled everybody with that one on my debut ( way to announce yourself).

Also regarding most recent posts can someone briefly explain the whole ‘ lift going up and down ‘ reference and how it applies to the test?

Thank you in advance

Hi D_Ellis88,

What I have found earlier you should do circle matching symbols only, forget everything else regardless in pairs or not. Eg: 8779980** etc.
Regarding "lift going up and down" I am also looking for further explanation, this is something new to me.

Thanks

Thank you for the response Wroyal, much appreciated. So are there only two symbols per set of numbers?

I see, mine is Southeastern.
How about yours?
MTR. I think regardless of TOC, TRC and TEA-OCC test will remain same among all TOCs however every TOC has their own passing marks.
When is your 1st day assessment?
