In case its of interest here, I've attached two shots I took at Tenby on 21/7/84 showing 47606 with the very late 0743 from Hull, which ran round and returned to Swansea at 1818. One shot at each end of the station, showing the track still there in the second platform. There is a disc signal for moves out of that platform, which seems to imply it was just a siding, as no up starting main signal.IMG_7342.jpgIMG_7348.jpg

Cracking photos, thanks! Interesting that the south end of the platform line has been disconnected and buffers put in. I don't suppose you know when it was converted into a dead-end siding from a loop platform line? A previous post had a line of tampers in the siding, was this it's main purpose or did it see use by parcels/mail/newspaper vans?

No Facing Point Lock on the trap points either, so not permitted for passenger trains.

It was a siding in 1956 and presumably had remained so ever since. It might have been used for parcels vans until Collect & Delivery was abandoned in 1981 if Tenby was a depot for this, but I don’t think that either newspaper or mail trains ever ran this way. Probably just kept for occasional use by the engineer’s Department once goods traffic had ceased. It might have been used for stabling passenger coaches, but they would have to shunt out to the main Up platform before departing as they couldn’t depart from the siding with passengers on board.

In the 70s and 80s summer Saturdays saw several loco hauled trains at Tenby. From memory there was a morning Swansea to Pembroke Dock which returned to Paddington. There was a balancing Paddington to Pembroke Dock which returned to Swansea. Then of course there was the York train each way with balancing turns to Swansea. This train also ran from Leeds and Hull in certain years. I don't remember any train using the third platform to stable though.

In about 1980 I went on a "Merrymaker" excursion, on a weekday, to Tenby. The train ran round and then shunted into that loop/bay and we left from there for the return journey. A fella wandered along from the direction of the signal box - I don't know if he was the signalman - and clipped the points before we left on the ground signal.

Back mid-1970's I was with my parents on a Cotswold line Merrymaker from the West Midlands. These were mostly on a Saturday as when on a trip we had to manage for food from the village shops.

I've two memories from that day. First it was raining much if not all of the time. The museum on the headland was crammed full. Second the Duff hauling the train was duff. Either on arrival or before departure they were refilling it from the fire hose. The first part of the return journey was slow. It was swapped, my mind says Cardiff but could have been Swansea. After much faster running but by then very late. Also a different route to outbound, my mind says via the Severn Tunnel so outbound would have been Gloucester - Lydney - Chepstow or even Worcester - Hereford - Newport if Cheltenham / Gloucester were not pick-up points. The latter route would avoid reversal at Worcester. The other outside possible route of course is via Didcot with setting down in the same order as pickup.

As to where the train was stabled and the departure platform I sadly have no memory of at all.

It was very probably the signalman, even if there were station staff available. Unless he could be sure that the person doing the job had put the clip on in the right place and correctly, it is best for the signalman to do it himself. (And, yes, clips have been put on in the wrong place (on the wrong rail or on plain line) or wrongly (over the top) on occasions.) Even so, if I were the signalman I might have wanted to check it had been done properly. I would presume that there was still a starting signal out on the viaduct to authorise entry into the section.

Yes the section signal was further out. Incidentally looking at the Tenby page on the Signal Record Society website there was once another loop alongside the third platform. The original signalbox was that side too before replacement in 1956 with the box shown in my photo.

There are some available online if you Google them. Some shots show the goods shed which was adjacent to the loop. I think there were 2 sidings serving the shed and goods yard.

We mentioned earlier the siding on the down side, north end of the station. At the back of my mind was camping coaches - I thought I recollected reading about them, and indeed, there were some located in that area until being cut up in 1983: this is a photo of one - hard to tell but at Tenby:

My nephew suggested the platforms at this station should be numbered from 9 upwards... just so you could have a Platform 10b at Tenby
