Evening Standard said:
A new map has been created showing sections of the Tube network which are above ground to help people who suffer from claustrophobia and anxiety.

It is hoped the map, released by TfL, will help commuters who struggle to use the London Underground work out routes they are comfortable with, and avoid long stretches of tunnels.

The new design - an amended version of the iconic Tube map - shows which stations and sections of the TfL network are below the ground by highlighting them in grey.

Half of the 270 stations on the Tube network are above ground, and the only lines that are entirely underground are the Victoria and Waterloo and City lines.

The new map, which had been welcomed by charities, also shows which London Overground, DLR and TfL Rail services are in tunnels.

The map can be downloaded like any other from the TfL Tube Maps site.

And good luck to anyone attempting to travel Zone 1 without tunnels..!

Interesting... it actually says "Sections of track and stations under tunnels! I'm trying to imagine that situation...

Interesting how they mark some "tunnels" on the Overground which are really just large bridges across the line between stations.

I think there has always been a grey area about when a long bridge becomes a tunnel on the railway! A colleague said to me that Preston Brook was the last tunnel going north towards Glasgow on the WCML. If the long motorway bridges of the M74 over rail do not count, then what is the canal tube under the road visible from Smethwick Galton Bridge platform?

Must a tunnel be bored, or can it be constructed?

The sub-surface (ie, non-tube) lines were not bored; the tunnels were created by 'cut and cover' methods.

...as was pointed out in post #3. The debate is how long does a constructed covered railway have to be before it is a tunnel rather than a bridge.

Are there a few very short sections on the "tube" lines that are cut&cover, mainly where they reach the surface, including bit of the Piccadilly at Heathrow?

- Hounslow West-Hatton Cross (just west of station)(except crossing over River Crane)
- just west of Hammersmith (PICC)
- White City-just west of Shepherds Bush

The map has the final approach to Liverpool Street as 'tunnel'; it sort of is because it is under the street, although it is still 'above ground'.
