I need to go to Chester on Thursday night and can see an opportunity to try the TfW dining experience. https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:W26623/2023-07-13 suggests I'll be in luck but how likely is it to actually run with dining?
https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/gerald-restaurant-service.250556/ doesn't fill me with hope!

How does the dining work, do you need a 1st class ticket or is like GWR where you can sit in 1st for the duration of the meal?
The meals cost extra now, however I'm not actually sure about being served in standard... @sd0733 may know?

To get the meals you have to upgrade to 1st (between £16 and £31 depending how far you're going) and then purchase the meal on top. Theres also some 1st class advances. I think it's currently £19 for 2 courses and £22 for 3 extra for the meal.

Is there a specimen TfW menu available showing what you might expect to receive for your money?

There was a working restaurant car on the 1230 Manchester-Cardiff today, and table service in 1st.
Shame there are no working trains on the Wrexham -bidston line. Proves where their priorities are.
Its just frustrating, some customers get to enjoy at seat meal service.....we don't even get a reliable bus replacement

I know that your trip is now done, but info might still be useful for others... You need to be in first class for the duration and the prices quoted are correct. I had this a few months back and I was impressed with the food. Proper China and cutlery too. I had a lamb rump and chocolate tart on the way up, pate (generous quantity) & fish on the way back. Plus it's complementary drinks and biccies as well.

So basically same good food and service as always, although it’s very cheeky that you now have to pay (yet pay the same price for First), and of course it’s now very hit and miss it being available.
