I'm a bit confused about this; before the Bournemouth electrification I would have thought those trains could have been steam-hauled, and after, the 71s could only work as far as Bournemouth. Didn't think the 71s ever worked on the SWD either so I'm lost

Some of the class 24s initially went to the southern region because they were boiler fitted. What duties did they end up on?

There’s an excellent piece about that era on the sulzertype2 website. It also has a list of the locos involved and where they ended up afterwards.

Good point, though the question then perhaps becomes which was the first to use its ETH equipment regularly in service.
As Manchester - Crewe electrification was completed in September 1960, maybe an AL1 (cl. 81) hauling dual-heat Mk1s when they became available?
