I noted the above in my programme guide. According to the limited information in both the printed programme guide, newspaper and the on-line guide:

"This heart-warming feature-length drama is based on Jacqueline Wilson's 2021 novel - itself a modern take on E Nesbit's The Railway Children."
and
"...transfers the adventure to Scotland and the city of Glasgow where the (three) Robinson siblings live a comfortable live with their parents. However when their father disappears they and their mum are uprooted to the remote Scottish Highlands...."
and
"...find unexpected excitement, danger and a new sense of belonging on a Highlands heritage steam railway."
And my thanks to the Moderator who added:

Anyone know anything about where this was filmed?

Thanks - did look at the end credits and they were credited. And at least the author does acknowledge E Nesbit's story as the inspiration for her version.

The railway segment didn't get off to a good start with a establishing shot of an electrified line.

Think the programme was repeated again this morning (Sunday 22nd December 2024) on BBC1 at around 10.35 a.m. Is that it for now?

Watched it through to the end, on Iplayer, some of the railway scenes were better than usual. Many of the nods to the 1970 film were a bit too obvious in my view. After the intro everything went OK until the final train journey when two stock shots of continental trains were included.

Channel 5 are showing "The Railway Children Return" as there main film on Christmas day.
