The Privatisation of British Rail: Success or Failure?

Do you back the current model of privatised railways or call for a renationalisation of the network?

This questionnaire is part of a Dissertation research project to understand staff and consumers views about the current model of privatised railways in the UK. The privatisation of British rail has almost certainly produced more controversy and media coverage than all the other UK privatisations combined. Therefore, your responses are important in enabling me to obtain as full an understanding as possible of this topical issue.

The questionnaire should take you about ten minutes maximum to complete. Please answer the questions in the spaces provided. Questions with an asterisk (*) require an answer. If you wish to add further comments to the multiple choice questions, please feel free to do so in the boxes below each question. The information you provide will be treated in the strictest confidence. You will notice that it is not mandatory to include your name in the questionnaire, however, space has been provided for you to do so if you wish.

The answers from your questionnaire and others will be used as the main data set for my 4th year Dissertation research project for my degree in Business and Management at Glasgow Caledonian University.

I hope that you will find completing the questionnaire enjoyable. If you have any questions or would like further information, please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected].

Links to the questionnaire are provided below. You will notice that there are two parts (two links) to the questionnaire, please complete both so that the results are vaild.

Thank you for your help.

Regards,

Scott Allan

Survay is confusing.

Many of the questions pose two (or more) different points of view then ask if you "agree with this argument" (Which argument, or both?)

Also as it is two separate surveys, will the initial demographic (age, gender etc) not be linked with part 2 (or does survey monkey use the IP).

Maybe im just thick. :/

I thought the same regarding the points of view.

Just out of interest will the anonymous results be published?

I've completed the survey. CliveJones does have a valid point about some of your questions; where this occurs I've gone for "Neutral" and explained my viewpoints in the text.

Good luck with your dissertation!

I thought there was a distinct pro nationalisation bias in the questions, you should adopt a neutral approach to the questioning and let the person being questioneds own bias show through if you want a meaningful and representative response on which to support your research.

That must have been the worst survey I've ever read. Biased so much that your natural reaction is to rebel against the bias just to make sense of the question.
Scott, I wish you well with the dissertation BUT may I recommend that you re-write the survey forms. The questions are biassed and in places not clear if more than one question and or statement are used together in the same question; very confusing.

The results are for my dissertation alone and will therefore not be published.

Scott, I have completed the survey. Several of the questions are badly worded - did you try it out on a few friends before putting it on-line? You need to reword some if you want to get a valid result.

I think the survey is a waste of time as Labour is totally against privatisation (so they claim) and all the years they were in power did not renationalise and companies that were privatised during the Tory reign. I would say it would be a better service all round if their were less franchises, say for instance 6 in all covering:

1. Scotland
2. Wales
3. ECML to include all the east of the UK
4. WCML to include the GWR region
5. Cross Country
6. London & the SE

I don't think his dissertation is a waste of time. It's a valuable exercise. I don't think anyone is satisfied with the current system as it stands; the opponents of privatisation obviously hate it, but those of us who support it can also see significant failings in the current system.

Whatever happens, the railways are going to be operated for the public, and its worthwhile listening to their views (even if they're not taken into consideration by the powers that be).
