Silly question, but what is the 10 minute stop at Beaulieu Road on the outward leg for?

No questions are silly! My guess is for watering (albeit a short stop for that), or an error in the timings. As there's no loop or siding there, there's no other reason such as a timing stop for pathing, etc. Edit - yes, see UKSteam web site - 11 minutes for watering.

theres no way for a truck to get to the train to water it unless they run a big hose out along the platform, they use to re fill railtours at brockenhurst on the lymington platform before so not sure why they wouldnt do that

The stop at bealieu rd is indeed for watering in the event of steam haulage, and requires a fire tender to supply the water. Last year, the fireman's (firefighters) industrial action caused cancellation of steam specials - no fire tender, no water, no steam haulage unless A4 with twin tenders avaliable, which can do the entire trip without the need to take additional water en route

It got cancelled between Staines and Victoria due to a problem with safety equipment (AWS perhaps?), any link between whatever equipment went wrong and it leaving Swanage just over an hour late?

The tender is normally a private company and not the Fire Service.

The reason a lot of steam was cancelled during the FBU strikes was because of the risk of lineside fires and the lack of anyone to put it out.

The Crompton failed at Swanage so it returned to Southampton using the steam engine tender first instead of being diesel hauled there.

The fire tender at Beaulieu is indeed private and the hose is run across the platform. This stop is beginning to become popular with enthusiasts.

By the time the train turned around at Southampton the Compton didn't sound too sick maybe the fault was cleared, however it was still running over an hour late so the path had gone.

It was the AWS that failed, which would have prevented the 33 from taking the ECS from Victoria, hence the termination at Staines. Made for a very rare instance of tender-first passenger haulage on the main line, though!
