Not a bad coach ride..and on time!! Stroll across to Southend Central and decide that the capital is calling, so we board the 1844 c2c service to London Fenchurch Street, arriving in time to miss the football fans from the 1500 kick-offs at 1942 on Saturday evening.

Is this our second or third week we have now completed?

Because it is dark at this time of the year (and Saturday night) and wanting to make a connection with a NR station once again, we board the 2018 D.L.R. service to Stratford, where we arrive at 2029 on Saturday night, to consider our onwards options.

We are going to board the 2035 NXEA service to Norwich.

You are supposed to say what time you arrive...and the day. The above service arrives at Norwich at 2236 on Saturday night.

Saturday night in East Anglia is quieter than in London, but there is still time for another journey. We board the 2240 NXEA service to Ely, arriving at 2338 on Saturday night.

Time for a hot drink and a sandwich and feeling refreshed from our overnight sleeper train, it is time to see what the Monday morning rush hour from London looks like, so we board the 0713 London Midland service to Birmingham New Street, arriving there at 0916 on Monday morning.

Deciding against sampling the retail delights of Meadowhall, but having enjoyed our first journey on Sheffield's tramway system, it is time to hurriedly access the correct platform and board the 1316 First TPE service to Cleethorpes, arriving at 1452 on Monday afternoon.

After a glance around Cleethorpes we decide to leave the nicer of the two main towns on the south side of the Humber estuary... in favour of the less appealing one (having just travelled through it as well). After a short walk to Sea Road, we board the Stagecoach 13 bus (leaving at 1520) to St James Church in Grimsby, close to the station, arriving a bit later on Monday afternoon, at 1546.

And yes, I did look that up

Since we enjoyed the last leg on a Stagecoach bus and having time for an afternoon snack, we decide to use another Stagecoach service to sample the delights of the local countryside and to hope to see some racehorses, so we board the 1710 Stagecoach number 3 bus service to Lincoln, via the Market Rasen area and its bus station, arriving at Lincoln City bus station at 1857 on Monday evening.

Lincoln bus station is a dump (unless it's been done up since early 2009)...

Unfortunately, someone had the idea of keeping this "dump" mood going, and although we get to see more countryside we end up in Skegness off the 2000 SC number 6 bus, arriving at the bus station at 2135 on Monday night.

We now find that the late evening in November, with a strong wind blowing off the North Sea onto the Lincolnshire coast, certainly makes true the old saying that Skegness is "so bracing". A quick walk round Berry Way from the bus takes us to Skegness railway station where we find that ...the last train of the day has been..."and gone".... Horrified, we now find there is no other option by rail tonight.

So it is time to make ourselves as comfortable as we can and wait for the 0709 EMT service to Nottingham, where hopefully we can warm up in the train, arriving there at 0920 on Tuesday morning.

Whilst at Belper, we decide to visit a place noted for the number of its antique shops, but no railway station these days, so after a hearty lunch, we board the 1222 Glovers service 113 bus to Ashbourne, arriving 1257 on Tuesday afternoon

Derby bus station is one of those that the buses pull in and reverse out of at an angle, like Burnley and Manchester Airport bus stations. We make our way to stop Y1 and eventually, the Transpeak service pulls in on its way from Nottingham and we board the 1450 service to Buxton that arrives at 1629 on Station Road, right opposite the train station, on Tuesday afternoon.

Time for a cup of coffee and a muffin on the station concourse at Manchester Piccadilly (and thankful we are not having to eat at the wild-west frontier post known as Manchester Victoria), we board the 1830 ATW class 175 service to Carmarthen, wondering if we should have taken out travel insurance that covers fire caused by hydraulic fluid leaking on any part of the train. However, this journey was uneventful and the train arrives on time at 2355 on Tuesday night.

I assume that was the 1830 departure from MAN?

With an overnight stay in Carmarthen looking likely, after a bit of rest we suddenly remember the overnight Fishguard run. So nearly three hours after our last journey, the 0244 service to Swansea leaves on-time, arriving into the Principality's Second City at 0324 on Wednesday morning - five minutes early.

Indeed it was and my post has been duly amended. I am not my usual keen self, as I have been celebrating my last day of temporary recall to the Consultancy....and now enjoying my retirement, albeit somewhat over-imbibed, which I do not normally indulge in.

Back to the matter on hand....We do not have to spend much time there and board the 0358 FGW service to London Paddington, arriving at 0749 on Wednesday morning.

Lets hop on the Bakerloo line to Elephant & Castle, which should take no more than 20 mins, getting us there by 8.30.
