There are security staff but the gateline is back to very often being left open in the late evening. Same with Euston.

Euston gatelines are always open at night now I've found ,but I use the 0134 or 0035 out of Euston back to MK a couple of times of week , and have always found the barriers closed at the MK end.

Very annoying with the ticket barriers , that they reject a day return because the return time is after midnight , so you have to show it to the security staff to be let out

Do the staff understand the time validity of the tickets?

I was at Rochdale yesterday and took the attached photos. You can see the stairs leading up to the small “concourse”. The top of the stairs faces directly to the ticket office. I just can’t see how you could barrier the station at this level, so we are stuck with the barriers in the subway down the two flights of stairs.

I noticed that the lady booking at the window was booking tickets for future travel.

Weird!

What if the TVMs don't sell the ticket you need?

Or want a transaction the TVMs can't handle e.g. if you need a photocard issued?

er through the barriers and purchase at the ticket office.

The layout can’t help, the platforms and ticket office being elevated and up two flights of stairs, the ticket office being directly facing the top of said stairs and with no real alternative position for the barriers (which are in the subway) and these being a relatively recent addition.

Not sure another solution is possible with this set up?

Looking at the National Rail plan of the station, it doesn't show the barriers but it does show the lift positioned between the platforms and the ticket office. So presumably anyone with a suitcase, pram, walking aid etc. can bypass the barriers without appearing to evade them?

At Huddersfield they did move the entrance/exit from the stairs from the ticket hall to platform 1 to allow barriers to be installed. EDIT: Just checked and they did it as part of the work that included installing lifts as an accessibility improvement in 2010, that pre-dated the barriers.

The entrance to descend in the lift is from the middle of the island platform, at ground level you exit the lift into the subway and still need to leave the station via the barriers. If you were to install barriers from the two doorways from the platforms to the stairs, then you still have the issue of the lift, which would require a third set of barriers at platform level too.

As mentioned up-thread there is kind of inevitability that at some point the ticket office will close and the issue disappearing with it.

I am at Wellingborough Station and since I was last here ticket Gates have been Installed. All well and Good, except for the fact that the Gates are positioned such that one of the 2 ticket Office Windows is INSIDE the Gateline! Not an issue today as the barriers are Open but could be a bit limiting at busy times with long queues at One Window...
Is there anywhere else where this is the case? I can think of 2 to start with, Rochdale and Blackburn...

Manchester Oxford Road is the same (though in this case, it has three windows on the non-paid side and one on the paid side). It's a reasonable compromise in my view.
