I want to buy a return from Milton Keynes to London. i see this is priced at £40.20. if i leave it until the day of travel next wednesday will the price change ?

How do i know which train ticket prices are likely to increase if you wait until the day of travel before buying them ?

That fare will not change (unless there is a fare increase round before then but I don't think there is?)

The fares that can change or disappear in the normal course of things are Advance fares. But while they do exist on this route few people will buy them for such a short journey.

so are you saying that any fare called advance is liable to change but if fare is not called advance it wont change. Is this the rule for all train companies in the UK ?

Anything called Anytime, Off-peak or Super Off-Peak (Single or Return) is a ticket that has no cap or quota and can be bought at the same price at any time before or at the point of beginning your journey.

Some companies have walk-up tickets with different names too, like Evening Out or Sunday Out.

There are other variations too like LNER's new ticket types.

But yes, as a general rule, it's Advance tickets that are quota-controlled and available at different price tiers

An off-peak return Milton Keynes to London Euston is £40.20 (https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=MKC&dest=EUS&expert=on&flow=1&multi=0&fare=6&tkt=SVR), can be bought from the station or online immediately before travel and will cost the same next week.

As long as this ticket is the right one for you, and you comply with the time restrictions it imposes (https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ticket-types/validity/lw/), buy it next week and be happy.

There may be cheaper tickets, with greater restrictions, and if you want to explain your requirements in more detail we may be able to help you further.

If you're travelling after around 0920-0930, and coming back the same day, you can save £15 by purchasing the Off Peak day return (valid to arrive London after 10am). Don't buy the Avanti only version - the loss of flexibility for 50p isn't worth it.

There are also Super Off Peak returns for under £20 which have very stringent time restrictions.

Are you coming back the same day? And what time do you need to arrive into London Euston by?

Indeed, the London North Western only ticket, off peak day return is £25.80, first trains its valid on are from 09.30, LNWR have trains that run non stop Milton Keynes - Euston, they take around 35 minutes, the stopper takes almost double that time.

I think i will get the super of peak return but can someone tell me the super off peak return price that allows the use of any train company. For some reason I wasn't given the choice of an open return it was insisting I buy two singles as that's cheaper so I used the avanti website and noticed the super off peak return fares but am not clear which one is for any train company use

There is no Super Off Peak Return for that route that allows you to use any operator; only the LNWR-only and Avanti-only. The cheapest period return fare that would be valid for both operators is the Off Peak Return at £40.20 (the one you mentioned in your opening post). If you're planning to travel to London and back home in the same day, there is the Off Peak Day Return at £25.80, which is valid on both LNWR and Avanti.
