At the end of this month, I will travel by train from ELS to SWI and have booked a return ticket marked with † (allows underground).
I am not sure if I am allowed to get off at West Hampstead Thameslink and enter West Hampstead underground station (which is probably a quicker route to Paddington), or is interchange only allowed at St. Pancras International - Kings Cross St. Pancras?

The booking site only mentions the latter but I found this as well. Is it official by any chance?

You’d be fine to change here.
You have a few options, either a Jubilee line to Baker Street and across to Paddington on whichever line you fancy. Or London Overground to Willesden Junction and down from there, of something else entirely. Be advised that if you leave the underground system then sometimes tickets don’t let you back in, so a manual check would be necessary.

So if it is valid on the Bakerloo from Willesden does that mean you could change at West Hampstead and take the 328 (which would obviously be at additional cost) to Kilburn Park and take the Bakerloo down to Paddington from there ?

At certain times, and if there is a 328 in your sights heading that way, it is a quicker route to Paddington than taking the Jubilee to Baker Street

You can only enter the network at the defined list of stations, the only exception is at Hammersmith where customers may interchange between the Met (C&H) and District (& Picc) stations.

So out at West Hampstead Thameslink and back in at West Hampstead on the Jubilee Line (or LO for that matter) is not allowed after all?
Or does the list entry of West Hampstead imply all 3 lines, Jubilee, LO and NR?

Out of interest, which return ticket did you buy? Was it Off Peak or Advance fares?

Out of NR at West Hampstead Thameslink (or LO) and in at West Hampstead underground is logically exactly the same as any change between separate NR and LU station gatelines, just like you’d do at somewhere like St Pancras. At West Hampstead the difference is that the entrances are separate buildings.

Be sure to follow your itinerary (except in disruption if advised otherwise)

Looking at the ticket, it does not specify the route I have to take in the underground system, and simply says:

Valid on <date of travel>
On specified trains & connections only

London Paddington -> Swindon
<date + time of train> : Coach x Seat y
