Both the 0954 and 1054 Liverpool to Newcastle services were cancelled at York and Stalybridge respectively, due to problems with the traction equipment. This seems strange as they were both 802s which you would not expect to fail. Can anyone shed any light on the matter?

It was a reaction to an issue with 2J59 at Morley which required the fire service to attend and line blockage.

It wasn’t an issue with the 802s but the cancellations and delay were linked to the 2J59 incident (which was coded MD), so will show as a problem with traction equipment on RTT.

The 09:54 was 116L when terminated at York having been stuck behind the issue at Dewsbury. The 10:54 was sent ECS to Liverpool and formed the 14:54 to Newcastle.

To add to the above very few services were able to divert via Wakefield (a few 1P** Redcar-Airpot services did do this) due to members of traincrew not signing the diversionary route, or they did know the diversionary route but due to the nature of the route being 2 track, they were stuck behind trains with traincrew that didn’t.

Hence why route knowledge should include any reasonable diversionaries as a matter of course!

Members of TPE staff on this forum have berated TPE for reducing the range of route knowledge of their workforce, and this is good evidence that their concerns are well founded. But that's a whole new topic in itself.

I was on the 09.47 Newcastle to Liverpool. That left Leeds and ground to a halt about 400 yards out of the station. Reversed back into the station and then diverted via Normanton.

In fairness that’s currently taking place/being addressed and there is an increased number of diversionary diagrams to maintain competency.

The problem lies that there’s no overtime/rest day (for drivers) currently, and other depots are currently focusing on learning ‘core’ routes for the Dec 2022 service changes.

Strongly agree here.

The other issue is you have staff at depots that know the diversions but don’t sign traction. So you have entire depots that could work trains from spare or amended diagramss when things do go down the pan unable to physically do anything because it’s the wrong type of train.

The major issue is the fact that a combination of Covid and Industrial Relations has meant that there's a backlog of over 15000 training. TRU works certainly in 22/23 that require diversions will see less services.
