I've just travelled to Sheffield from Manchester on a TPE 6-car 185. Throughout the journey, passengers were advised that only the front 5 cars would be on the platform at Sheffield.

We arrived on Platform 1 (as usual) which is more than long enough for 6 cars. Does the technology think the train is stopping just on Platform 1B without realising that Platform 1A is there, or is there some other explanation?

The 185’s use CASDO which has beacons either end of the platform which the train picks up as it crosses them.

I’m not familiar with Sheffield but there is some other locations where the 185’s must go a little beyond the actual stop marker for the train to realise the doors are fully accommodated.

Possibly Sheffield is one of the locations that the train is not able to go beyond the stop marker. Either way it will probably be down to a CASDO, although if fully accommodated the guard could possibly override it.

If first class is at the extreme rear, occasionally it will not open the rear set doors.

This is because the beacon reader on the first class end is located in a different position to the other carriages due to the location of the toilet retention tank and it’s associated components.

It’s an extremely tight platform if the train enters using the points in the middle of the platform rather than the full length of 1. Additionally if the driver stops a few yards short and not exact or as close as possible to the stop marker, the rear carriage will not open, to prevent passengers at the extreme rear set of doors from facing a very large gap between train and platform

Similar issues also occur elsewhere on the network at Huddersfield platform 8 and Leeds 11D/12C

What’s CASDO?

Certainly on paper for us 1B via the through road is 5 cars though you can just squeeze 6. I assume the train path is booked to run in that way and so the train decides it will only fit 5 on. If you run in via 1A obviously you can get a full length train of any sort in more or less.
