Hi, I’m trying to pursue my dream in becoming a train driver. Just wondered if you had to do any psychometric tests? If so what is your best advice for passing them and can you recommend any material to practice the tests. Many thanks.

Well done, hopefully you'll be offered a job soon. I don't want to put a downer on this for you, but I assume you've been made aware how the process works, and what being in the talent pool means? Fingers crossed you get a start date soon!

Hi mate
Yes you do have a few psychometric tests and all I can say is use the materials you will be sent when you apply and as the saying goes practice makes perfect. Good luck.

Hi mate.
Yes I know it can be a long wait and I'm not expecting to hear anything this year especially with the current situation. I would just like to hear about some of the things the course involves. Cheers.

Perhaps this website will help. It is from the Rail Delivery Group. The website is quite good and helped me when I was asking the same question having being offered a position.

I have been doing my corporate induction from home and as far as I am aware I will do an 11 week course involving all the classroom learning and technical know-how. After this is the sim centre work and so forth. I have also been informed you need proof of your GCSE in Maths and English. If you don't have them to C grade I think you will go on a separate course to get them before moving forward. At least that's how it was explained to me for my TOC.

Congrats for getting into the talent pool. It may take a while to move through it or it could happen instantly. I waited for 1 year in a talent pool when being a conductor for ATW. My single piece of advice is after all this virus stuff is over to send an email to HR once in a while to ask for an update. Which also reminds them your in a talent pool. ATW posted the job again and forgot I was in the talent pool!

Good Luck and Stay Safe.

Hi.
Thanks very much for your help I really appreciate it. It's took me 10 months to get to this stage so I know it can take a while. Really looking forward to it. Cheers.

You’re doing an Apprenticeship by the sounds of it, hence the A-C in Maths and English. GWR don’t do this yet so it’s not a requirement to have GCSEs. As for the Train Driver Academy, that too is a daily new thing I believe in a bit to standardise training? It’s handy that some TOCs have started using this as it’s largely e-learning which is handy in the current climate.

It was explained to me that its not an apprenticeship in the traditional sense, but I think its something similar. I don't mind either way. It was explained that it was an 11 week course for rules etc then to the next stage of learning to drive back at the TOC.

I guess it doesn't really matter and TPE have mentioned that it makes no difference to how I will be taught to drive or working for TPE.

I thought it was a bit weird at first as I expected to just be taught in-house.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I'm only in my late teens so it is a daily battle for me trying to get my foot in the door.

Couple of weeks induction before being in the classroom for approximately 8 weeks for rules. Then you have various traction and route learning courses prior to driving your first train.

However as Stigy said this Pandemic will definitely have an effect on recruitment in the long term. At this time I believe Exeter is full. Obviously people retire so hopefully there be something positive for you this year.
