Interlocking them with the signals would be a nightmare if the signal was to fail. Having a door interlock cut into the same circuit you were fault finding probably isn't the smartest idea.
Assuming the photo is of the actual locs in question, these type of locs aren't generally used on new installations as far as I know. Certainly our locs were replaced during resignalling with the modern type with proper hinged doors, rather than these with doors which drop down and have to be lifted away completely to gain access.
It's lucky no one was around at the time; I'd imagine one of those doors would break bones at the very least. Theyre pretty substantial solid wood things, with a metal outside.
