Section 17.3 Side window working
If it is not possible to gain access to the driving cab through means of normal operation of the cab bulkhead door, then side window working must be implemented. Prior to proceeding with side window working, you must give consideration to the following factors:
- The geometry of the window
- The geometry of the driver
- The possibility of the driver becoming stuck ("failed") in the side window section
- Whether or not there is a large audience
Authorisation must be sought from the relevant train operating companies' control before proceeding with side window working.
Section 17.4 Person in lieu of porky
If, according to section 17.3, the risks of side window working are considered high then a pilotman (person in lieu of porky) can be used instead of the train driver. The pilotman must be deemed competent by the relevant train operating companies' control to proceed with side window working and the pilotman must consider the risks in section 17.3 before proceeding.
