I'm beginning to think this has got completely out of control now. The Thought Police and PC Brigade have taken it over and playing on the Equalities Act. Every day some new proposal crops up with students particularly having their say. Campaigners are picking on every little thing they can find now saying this should be done or that should be done. There have always been transgender people with us and everybody has just got on with their lives without complaint and we never heard anything about the subject. I never seem to read anything from trans gender people themselves.
Similar to Councils re-naming Christmas so not to affect Muslims but have they ever asked Muslims themselves. Let people think for themselves.

Only five minutes ago I saw the front page of the Mail on Sunday as part of the BBC 'Newspapers' page.

Apparently NHS doctors are no longer to call a pregnant woman an 'expectant mother' in fear of offending transgender people.

World has gone mad.

The Mail on Sunday takes aim at what it calls a "ludicrous, politically correct directive to placate the transgender lobby". It says the British Medical Association has told NHS doctors not to call pregnant women "expectant mothers", in case the term offends transgender people.
A spokesperson from a transgender support group tells the Mail that the advice to doctors is a "massive step forwards" in preventing discrimination. But the paper's leader column says transgender campaigners are not entitled to force their opinions about changing language on to others.

In all honesty, The Daily Mail doesn't merit the title 'newspaper'. Nothing but trouble-stirring pseudo-fascist bigotry in that overrated sh*trag.

(Not that I'm opinionated or anything!)

More importantly, why hasn't anyone else told us about Mary Berry being in captivity?

source? By the way, the celebration at this time of year is very traditional and pre-dates Christianity. It was previously Yule but got re-named Christmas :P

I for one certainly remember the year of 'Winterval' in the West Mids!

Is that the "Winterval" which ran from mid October till January that also included Halloween, Bonfire Night, Eid and New Years Eve? The "Winterval" that the (usual) tabloids have to keep printing apologies about every time they try and bring it up saying it was about not using the name "Christmas"?

The Thought Police and PC Brigade

How do we go about identifying someone form these organisations? Do "The Thought Police" have powers of arrest? Do they wear a uniform?

And as for "The PC Brigade", are they like the Boys Brigade? Do they recruit young boys/youths, put them in uniform and drill them in church halls?

I think we should be told. :D

I respectfully suggest that the OP will get precisely nowhere using terms like 'Thought Police' and 'PC Brigade' in their first line. All they are doing is criticising people they know very little about and this will eclipse what substantive debate on the matter there is to be had.

Anyone quoting from or drawing on that bastion of high-standard journalism the Daily Mail in order to form their opinion will surely think the world has gone mad every single day - and they could scarcely be more wrong.

My view is there is no issue. We can and do treat people with gender dysphoria quite well. Notwithstanding a significantly under-resourced NHS that is, which is perhaps a problem area the OP could look at shifting some of their concern towards.

That sounds suspiciously like suppression to me. In the past, the subject was so taboo as to make people hide their real identity from public view, suffering much pain and damage without any support from a British society that was too inflexible for its own good. We are now in a far more enlightened age where people should be free to express themselves without fear of discrimination. If it means providing an extra toilet cubicle with a slightly different pictogram on the door, in order to ensure everyone is treated fairly, then who cares? It's not as if it causes anyone else a problem, except bigots who are offended by how other people identify and express themselves.

The "Thought Police" are people who considered joining the police but then decided on a different career.

I presume "The PC Brigade" are just the IT department of the Boys Brigade.

One thing has always bothered me about the term "politically correct"; if it's correct what's the problem?

It's concerning the OP feels so threatened by this.

Here's what happened the last time he had a bit of a crisis about trans people: http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=133698

This is a discussion Forum where people are entitled to disagree if they want to rather than trade sarcastic remarks. The alleged crisis is not about trans gender people but about the people who seem to be picking on any little issue to try and promote change to the lives of trans gender people. Now out of all proportion..

I referred to reading, not asking people.
Then might I suggest doing so?
To give you some pointers - Jack Monroe, Paris Lees, Laverne Cox, Anohni, Laura Jane Grace and Caitlyn Jenner are all transgender people in the public eye, with numerous interviews and profiles available online to read.

How has this impacted on your life or those around you?

Not sure where i've formed an opinion by merely linking something I'd stumbled across just minutes before I noticed this thread, it is related after all.

Regardless, I don't need a Daily Mail headline to suggest to me that the world has gone mad, I can see it often enough with my own eyes. I'm not wrong and i'm not the only one that would think so.

According to an earlier post, I must not call an expectant person a mother. No, it's not impacting on my life but what is, is the fuss being made of it now.

I think that only applies if you are a doctor. However, it was in the Mail and as already pointed out, it's probably bollocks. I only posted it because of the immediate relevance to your thread.

I share your annoyance though, even if untrue, the whole fact that someone has thought up such a front page 'headline' makes my head spin.
