Just checking - if I want to upgrade my ticket to a weekend first for £6 on Transpenine am I entitled to sit in first class until the conductor comes round then ask for the upgrade?

I've done it a couple of times recently - a godsend coming back on the weekend trains from Manchester! (And I don't think that many people are aware they can do it!)

Yes you pay it on the train with Transpennine Express subject to seating being available.

A previous thread from 3 years ago (but still relevant) is available here
TPE Weekend Upgrade
Prices may well have changed though

From the TPE website:

"Holders of Standard Class tickets may upgrade to First Class on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays on payment of a £6.00 single journey supplement to the Conductor between any two train stations on the First TransPennine route network. (On our Manchester to Edinburgh and Manchester to Glasgow train services the single journey supplement is £10.00)."

In short, yes.

(is there any TOC which offers weekend 1st that CANNOT be bought on board?)

Looking at the NRE website (which I know isn't the most reliable) but was the quickest reference in a google search on the subject, it indicates that it is standard practice for: East Midlands Trains; East Coast; First Great Western; Abellio Greater Anglia; London Midland; ScotRail; South West Trains; First TransPennine Express; Virgin Trains; CrossCountry.

I wouldn't have thought so as upgrading to weekend First is often a case of standard being busy.
