Could someone explain the travel privileges for train drivers? Is it free travel on your own employer's trains? Is it for the whole family? Does it include other TOCs and things like the Tube, Merseyrail or T&W metro? Are there restrictions on the amount of travel and times of day etc?

It very much depends who you work for.

In most instances, it is free travel on your TOC for residential, duty and leisure purposes for you as an employee.

Your spouse/partner and dependants will receive free travel for leisure purposes only (children also receive free travel to places of education in most instances).

In terms of free travel on other tocs under the same parent company - it is very much dependant on what company you work for. First Group as an example do not give free residential travel to staff employed on sister TOCs and you do not recieve unlimited use for leisure travel.

Abellio and Arriva on the other hand do allow unlimited leisure and residential travel on sister TOCs. It will all be outlined and made abundantly clear to any new starters what they can and cannot do with their travel facilties.

Misuse is treated very seriously by most employers.

You generally get free travel for you and immediate family (wife/husband and kids if still in education) with your employer and 75% discount off all other TOCs operators. No time restrictions and as for the metro etc I'm not sure, I think certain TOCs may have some discount with those but can't say for sure.

Great content. I never knew about their perks. It's always interesting to me as I see them roaming around the trains, but I never understand where they end up at. It seems to me though that trains are starting to pick up with the pandemic finishing. Maybe one of the reasons is the ease of hopping on a train compared to the difficulties that Airlines have to deal with to complete embarkation. For the local tourism industry affected by train stations, this might be a great thing and I read about it in some intuitive article I found just recently.

Are other railway employees allowed to ride in the back cab (or even driving cab) for their commute to/from work ?
Back cab? Guards discretion, regardless of role.

Front cab? No, and neither are drivers.

Even pre-covid my employer would have taken an extremely dim view of riding in the front cab unless they HAD to be there.
