Im planning a trip with a group of us from Sheffield to Warrington, with all of us traveling with bikes (exact dates and numbers depending on train prices and routes). I don't travel on the route regularly but from what I have seen East Midlands Trains usually seems to have 2x 158s on that route. East Midlands Trains usually have a policy of 2 bikes per train but presumably since they are coupled together there are actually 4 spaces on these trains? Is it possible to book the extra spaces (if they exist)? And do all of the services run as two sets or is it just a peak time thing?

Vast majority of the EMT services from Sheffield towards Liverpool are formed of 2 units, there are some at the start/end of the day which are only single units.

Occasionally the unit attached between Nottingham & Liverpool is a 156 rather than a 158. I am told (but have not seen) that very rarely, they have used a single 153 instead of a 158.

Between Nottingham and Liverpool (and vice-versa) they are meant to be 4 carriages (158+158), however PPM work and a general lack of units have meant that they have been suffering as a result. Often 158 will be replaced with a 156 or less often a 153. If you are particularly unlucky then it will simply be a 158.

To be honest a 156 is a good thing, they actaully have more room for bikes that the 158s. But irrespective, if it is booked for 2x 158, your will be able to reserve 4 bikes from my experience. If it is short formed and rammed you could be doing a lot of detours.

Thanks do you know to book all four spaces? I've tried a few random bookings on the Tpexpress website and couldn't get it to offer more then two. Even tried doing two different bookings in case it only showed two at a time.

Never done more that 2. But best in this situation to call EMT directly.
