Notes:
*1: Attached to the rear of 1P22 from Melton Mowbary at Kettering, proceeds as 1B19.
*2: Train at TL platform about to go so jumped on without checking. Wrong train, not for London Bridge, no problem, just change at Farringdon.
*3: Right train this time.
*4: Maidstone East station has original buildings at platform level plus a not unpleasant new building on the overbridge, although it’s a bit odd going into the new building with the ticket office etc., then going out onto the road again to walk down to P2. Maidstone seems like a pleasant town, with some nice gardens right next to the station, the Medway river walk (somewhat spoiled by a busy road), and a cluster of interesting historic buildings in the All Saints church area. On the high street is the high end Royal Star shopping arcade, overall a good variety of shops and an usually low number of empty units gives an impression of prosperity.
*5: Made a tight connection at Ashford here due to being one minute early and on the same platform island.
*6: Due to unexplained slow running in the Staplehurst area (no other services involved, maybe a TSR/ESR?), missed the planned connection at Sevenoaks for the service to Blackfriars via Bat & Ball and Otford, so carried on to London and left that for another day.
*7: Late running made the connection to the 1505 St. Pancras to Nottingham service impossible. This was probably for the best since 5 minutes is really too tight going up from the TL platforms to the EMR platforms via the far escalator (it’s fine going the other way, via the near escalator).
*8: The post-pandemic “Monday effect” seemed to be in force with all trains noticeably lightly loaded.
