22/08/2012 Date of Trip:

My Boyfriend left his house and bought the tickets for us all, at Stratford International with the Control Ticket's, he told me that he then boarded the HS1 Train to meet me at Chatham, where i was waiting for the HS1 service he was on, we then boarded the 08:13 service down to Dover from Chatham, Calling all stations, this was one long trip!.

We arrived into Dover Priory at 09:30 where we boarded the bus, as it came as we came outside the station, we then boarded it and we missed check in for the 10:15 service, so we got ourself checked in onto the 11:15 by handing in our "Control Tickets" we then boarded the bus to take us through Passport Control, they checked my Boyfriend's passport, but with mine they just waved me through.

The Ship we Boarded was the Pride Of Canterbury, so we went for a wander before everyone got on, and decided it was best to go and get some food, we waddled upto the café and got Sausage & Chips and a drink, £18! the chips wasn't even that Nice.

We arrive into Calais at roughly 13:30 french time, which would be 12:30 English, and we get off the boat walk down this extremely long ramp, and we follow signs to the Town Centre, which leads you up this big metal ramp, and into a car park; as we passed we got lost in the car park as the signs vanished so we waited for other people and followed them, on our way to the town centre we passed the clandestestise [the people who try and jump on the back of lorries] being fed, by a homeless charity!

We then walk into Town, and then we decided what our options were; as we had no idea what to do, so we say Cite Europe, like discussed in the Fares Guide, so we walk all the way to the Theatre, try to board a bus; but the queue's were so long we decided not to bother, We just went in a shopping centre close to the theatre and have a donut and a drink, we then saw these free buses that run up and down, so we boarded on one and got off the town hall, and decided to go up the top of the tower for 5€ and then go into Calais Park, into the War Museum, which is very intrestering.

We then boarded back on the free bus, and headed to it's final stop, and we then had to walk but we ended up going to the beach, and relaxing even though we didn't have towels, but we spent a hour on the beach even though every time a ship went past i would get sand up my skirt,

we then tried every public toilet, but none of them worked on the beachfront so we had to find a hotel to be able to use a toilet, which was a experience and a half,

My Boyfriend then decided by this time it was 5pm to go for dinner, and treat me, so we ended up going to a little restaurant called Le Tour Eifel, we both had Steak and Chips and two Drinks Each, came to €23, which I don't think is bad,

We then Decided by 6:15 we walk up to the Ferry Terminal, so we walk up and they say do you want to check in for the 6:55 i say Yes, my boyfriend says No, and then i wonder why, and he goes we want to be on the Spirit of France at 7:55pm and upgrade to Club Class, If you have the chance DO IT,

It;s €7pp extra but its well worth it, Free Food, Free Champaine, Free Soft Drinks, Free Tea and Coffee's, Better Seating and a Better Deck [Private]

We left Late aswell, so got to experience it better; all in all a good day out, apart from the Drunks on the train back to Chatham.

If anyone wants any more information, care to message :)

Awesome - the old Calais day trip by train and sea!

I did this sometime before the tunnel was built, when it felt like a very exotic experience to go abroad for the day (I think it was something like a 5am start and 23.00 home arrival) - though I dare say it still does!

The old classic day out was 7am from Charing X to Dover Priory and back around 2300. Gruelling.

Remember coming back on a rake of 2 HAP's carrying some new fangled products called Petit Filou yoghurts (+ wine and cheese) - 1980 nostalgia for you,

Good to see the spirit lives.,

I do have to commend the shopping centres in Calais - did you visit the one next to the Eurotunnel terminal?

Sounds like a great day out! I might try something like it one day :p

What sort of food did you get in the Club Lounge? I'm still trying to find time to do my trip and for €7, the upgrade looks like it could be good value for the return journey.

Sorry for the late reply Brucey, But the food you can get is biscuits crisps and snacks, or there is a menu on your table for food which is delivered from the "posh" Restaurant; and you don't have to pay straight away you pay when your about to leave, or whenever you want too.

I think I got a BLT [Bacon Lettuce Tomato] sandwich on the return, and it cost me £5 BUT what they provided with it was lovely, I had The Sandwich 7 triangles, Salad with a nice dressing and crisps.

It's better than the package stuff you would get up in the café

Thanks Pink. The €7 definitely looks worth it for the return journey when I'll probably be tired!
