Unsure if a similar thread has been done recently or not.

The purpose of this thread is to see how many direct trains that connect places that are the headquarters of county councils, excluding London. All guises and locations of county councils whether past or present are accepted.

I'll start off here with a couple of obvious ones.

Aberdeen - Penzance:
Aberdeen (Aberdeenshire/Aberdeen City/Grampian Region), Dundee (Dundee/Angus/Tayside Region), Markinch (Fife - this has a Glenrothes postcode, so is deemed to be part of it), Edinburgh (Lothian Region), Morpeth (Northumberland if calling there) Newcastle (Tyne & Wear), Durham (County Durham), York (North Riding of Yorkshire - has that relocated to Northallerton?/Yorkshire), Wakefield (West Riding of Yorkshire), Derby (Derbyshire - before relocation to Matlock), Birmingham (West Midlands County Council), Bristol (Avon), Taunton (Somerset), Exeter (Devon), and Truro (Cornwall - or a country rather than county depending upon preferences).

Manchester - Bournemouth:
Manchester (Greater Manchester County Council), Stafford (Staffordshire), Birmingham (West Midlands County Council), Oxford (Oxfordshire), Reading (Berkshire - before it became fragmented), Winchester (Hampshire). Dorchester (Dorset) was formerly connected when ICXC services used to run to Weymouth. Also, I would award half a point to the present Newcastle - Guildford service, as Surrey County Council is shared between Guildford and Kingston upon Thames.

A conundrum for those south of the mighty Thames: is Surrey (both Kingston upon Thames and Guildford) connected to any other places that is or was a county council (other than Guildford and Reading), or is it just London? Furthermore, are any Weymouth trains diverted via Guildford when the Basingstoke route is closed? If so, another half point awarded as it would mean Guildford and Dorchester are connected.

Diverted Weymouth trains do stop at Guildford yes. County towns connected to Guildford are Oxford; Derby; York & Durham, thanks to the Cross Country service

Edinburgh - Helensburgh via Bathgate:
Edinburgh (City of Edinburgh Council), Livingston (West Lothian Council), Glasgow (City of Glasgow Council) & Dumbarton (West Dunbartonshire Council, with the line also passing within shouting distance of W.D.C's offices in Clydebank).

Hull to Beverley

Bending the point here, but Hull is classed as both a city council and a county council

Taunton to Plymouth and Truro is another two and I would have thought a few destinations served by crosscountry.

Trowbridge (Wiltshire) - (City & County of) Bristol - Gloucester

If unitary authorities count we can also have Trowbridge - Bath, Southamotin and Portsmouth

I thought that Kingston is entirely within Greater London rather than Surrey?

It is, but I think the issue is that Surrey CC never moved all their offices from Kingston. It's analogous to the situation donkey's years ago when Northumberland's county hall was in Newcastle, despite Newcastle being outside Northumberlans as its own administrative county.

I wasn't going to post specially, but earlier in the thread there's reference to Tyne and Wear County Council being in Newcastle, but AIUI the council was completely abolished in the most recent shakeup, and that county has only a ceremonial function.

Another planet...
Penistone line: Kirklees (Huddersfield) - Barnsley - Sheffield.
Huddersfield to Wakefield links Kirklees and Wakefield City. The old "Grand Tour" did Leeds (not sure if Selby is home to a council HQ), Bradford, Calderdale (Halifax), Kirklees and Wakefield - all 5 of the Metropolitan councils that make up West Yorkshire.

Of course none of these are County Councils, but still...
