Sticking to British trains, Pendolino traction and bogies, 125mph Class 444 derivative body, but with Chiltern 168 seating (their own seats rather than the inherited 170s). And until HS2 is built, a tilt version for the WCML, but with larger windows than the 390 and a reduced angle of tilt to enable a wider body. Working USB chargers, toilet sinks that don't flood the floor and a decent tray table for the airline seats.

Not bothered about buffet cars, I'd rather make sure that the stations at either end of my journey had a decent supermarket and a quality real ale pub!

If it has to the UK, a Mk2e 1st, a Mk1 kitchen, and a sleeping vehicle from the royal train. I don't care what pulls it. I mean, the entire royal train would do too.

From anything... um. For now let's go with a classic Rheingold set.

It’s a shame a diesel/AC/DC hybrid version of the 444 wasn’t built in SWT config (2+1 seating in first) but with extra luggage space. There’s so many routes that would have be suitable, either that or if not 185s with ASDO and gangways but with a higher density. (Even if you had derated engines)

Too far from an HST...
Early Mark IIs, up to IIb, steam heated.
Are there many of these in mainline condition left? I haven't seen the WCRC ones on the mainline in sometime, which is a shame as imo they're really nice carriages.
Back to the original question,
How about a 180 that's just coaching stock with a loco on the other end? (Like the Mk5s)

A UK sized Railjet set, complete with a UK sized Taurus.

A close second would be a tilting Mark 4 rake, still with a 91 as traction.

Another vote for Siemens ICE 3 NEO for XC. Soft lighting, a sit down restaurant car etc etc
This ☝️

Though we’re constantly told that in this country we can no longer have/afford:

- Things that we used to have here a few decades ago;
- Things that new rolling stock on the continent still has.

I.e. comfortable seats, long trains, restaurants, compartments, passenger adjustable lighting/heating/announcement volume.

For everyday use - can't beat a long rake of Mk2 opens, pre-aircon of course, with at least 2000bhp + steam-heat boiler (working) on the front.

For high days and holidays, the GW150 Limited set, with proper Welsh steam coal for the locos and no 50044 on the back...
