Gathursty has recently become Bryn-y after moving so I am adjusting to my new local line with fancy electric units. Similar to Gathurst, this line has fairly regular services and the furthest I could get to from Bryn is predictably Liverpool Lime Street and in the other direction Preston at peak time or, on a Saturday, Blackpool North.

There is far more variety at Wigan North Western/Wallgate but they are just a whisker further away than Bryn is.

How far can a direct service take you from your local station?

York to Penzance (416 miles)
York to Inverness (380 miles)

In practice, the direct trains to both of the above do not usually take the shortest route, so the actual mileage is normally longer than that quoted above.

And I'm within walking distance of the station too!

You can't really beat that for connectivity ;) (OK, living within walking distance of Birmingham New Street/Moor Street would give a wider choice of destinations, but many of the routes out of Brum are tediously slow and it just wouldn't have the same appeal!)

The furthest I can get from my local station (East Didsbury) is Cleethorpes on a northbound departure (one train daily at 2056), or to Crewe on a southbound departure (1tph).

If I want to travel by daylight, then the furthest I think I can get is Llandudno (thanks to the new extensions to the Manchedter terminating serviced)

Busier stations in walking distance for me are Oxford Road (so Norwich furthest eastbound and Edinburgh furthest Westbound), Manchester Picc (so I think its Edinburgh westbound and Newquay southbound) or Stockport (with Barrow northbound and Newquay southbound)

Delights of Exeter, Bristol during the peaks, Salisbury during the off-peak heading west. London Waterloo heading east.

Plus a summer Saturday service to Weymouth.

Like you but add 44miles towards PeeZed as I'm in Darlington

Furthest from Batley is Manchester Victoria at the moment. However Skelmanthorpe (where I spend about 30% of my time) will get me only to Shepley or Clayton West on the KLR. Nearest proper station to there is Denby Dale which once a day would get me to Retford Low Level.

Furthest from Hull is London King's Cross (178 miles)
In normal hours is Manchester Piccadilly (94 miles)
Although both lines curve a fair bit, so it's more like 110 miles to Piccadilly and 215 miles to King's Cross.

My local station is Scarborough.

At the moment, we have the Saturday LM service to St Pancras (258m49c) - failing that, it's to Liverpool Lime Street (160m5c) or to Sheffield (113m19c).

My local is Colchester Town. I can go all of 53 or so miles maximum, to London Liverpool Street or about fifteen miles to Walton OTN.

Surely the record will be for anyone whose local Station is Penzance! Their longest distance service covers about 776 miles.

For me, its Oakham.

So the far end east is Standsted Airport that's about 2 hours give and take.

The end west terminal is Birmingham New Street (or the cave) as I call it as it was dark and gloomy when I left passed through there as the platforms are underground mainly.

On the plus side. I can get good connections at Peterborough, Leicester and Nuneaton if I need to go elsewhere for my travelling adventures ;).

West Allerton is at the end of my road so the furthest I can get direct is Manchester Piccadilly. I can pop down the road to South Parkway and get to Norwich direct, so near and yet so far.

I'm surprised at how few people have given a London terminus, given how many lines go into the city. I'll be joining that select few. From my new base in North Wales, I can catch direct trains to quite a few English towns and cities, but the furthest is comfortably London Euston.

It's the first time in my life that London has been the destination. Most of my life, the answer would have been Helensburgh Central (from Airdrie and Blairhill). After the opening of the Airdrie to Bathgate Line, Edinburgh narrowly became the furthest before I moved up North. From Elgin, my furthest was Glasgow Queen Street, and then a year in Aberdeen where I temporarily would have held the record as Harbornite has already pointed out (Penzance). A year in Livingston brought Helensburgh Central back into play.

I guess for it to be a long journey to a London terminus you would have to live near a major station, more people will live nearer to a smaller station without a direct service to London.

For Dalmuir, it's London Euston (409 miles, give or take a few), then Mallaig (152 miles).

From Leighton Buzzard, I guess the furthest is Crewe via Birmingham, once a day! (And once a day back in the morning to get back, but that is the first off-peak train from many places to London Euston, so gets incredibly busy and can be full and standing from Northampton on a good day!)

From Cambridge to Birmingham New Street (145-ish miles)

But you can travel in the opposite direction from Gloucester to Cambridge directly once per weekday (must be 200ish miles?)

I'd be interested to see what the 'loser' is for this. I imagine anybody who lives near somewhere like Stourbridge Town?!

For myself from Hazel Grove it's the 95m74ch journey to Barrow-in-Furness. Only one train a day, mind.
