Jo Kibble, mentioned elsewhere in these forums, did it again: travelled 24 hours by train from London St Pancras to Bova Marina (a municipality of some 4100 souls in Calabria, at the southernmost end of mainland Italy)- a total of 1960 km (1218 miles).
How far do you think you could get in 24 hours travelling only by train?
This is the question that Brit Jo Kibble set out to answer this week. Leaving from his home in London, he wanted to find the furthest point he could get to from St Pancras International Station in a single day.
The timer started the moment the doors closed on the 7:01am Eurostar service to Paris.

Oh well, to each his own....

There are hundreds of places 1230 miles away by road, but Jo Kibble's idea was to travel by train.

And deltic has checked train times. And they are less risky than OP's, even if the destination is less obviously attractive than the instep of Italy.
You just need to choose an overnight train with good connections, which currently most likely means the NJ from Brussels or Köln to Innsbruck or Vienna.

In the USA, the Southwest Chief, fastest long-distance Amtrak service, Chicago to Los Angeles, does the 1,274 miles from Chicago as far as Lamy, New Mexico, in just 24 hours running time (clocks go back 1 hour along the way). Average 53 mph.

Not as fast as it used to be. In the 1950s heyday the Super Chief on this route used to get from Chicago as far as Gallup NM, just over 1,500 miles, in 24 hours.
