Streatham Common to Streatham Hill is around a half-hour walk, and I think it would be quicker by rail, so long as there's a timely connection at Balham. On the other hand, Streatham to Streatham Hill, a rather shorter distance, would require two changes, at Streatham Common and Balham, and it might be quicker to walk, even with timely rail connections.

This may be cheating as the two stations aren't officially for the same town, but Gathurst Station is (just) in the boundaries of the suburb / township of Orrell just outside Wigan, and is 2.3 miles away from Orrell Station.

Google maps suggests a 49 minute walk, but you can change trains at Wallgate and if timed correctly do it in 28 minutes by rail covering a distance of approximately 6 miles.

The SWR service between Richmond and Kingston takes 18 minutes to travel roughly 5 miles. By contrast, the 65 bus can take up to 30 mins to travel 4 miles between the two stations.

I always opt for the 65 though as it feels a lot quicker than travelling all the way around the Thames twice on SWR.
Quite so, but it does very much depend on when you set out, as the trains only run every 30 minutes and the buses every 6 minutes (although in practice both figures are averages).

Conversely, Kingston to Twickenham is much quicker by train because of the circuitous route taken by the 281. It still follows the route of the old 601 trolleybus (London's first and last trolleybus service), and itself a successor to a tram route. The tramlines were taken up in 1932, and the trolley wires taken down in 1962, but the 281 still faithfully follows them instead of taking the direct route via Cross Deep.

Newton to Mount Vernon perhaps? 1.5 miles between the two directly north-south however the walking route would take far longer than travelling on train via Rutherglen

Buckshaw Parkway to Euxton Balshaw Lane is a 38 minute walk according to Google Maps, but can be done in 29 minutes by train, changing at Leyland

I have raced the train ( Walking) between Newark Northgate and Castle. got off it at Northgate and got on the same one at Castle. But that really depends on how long it is held crossing ECML.

East Croydon to Wellesley Road is certainly faster on foot than by tram (but not in the other direction); East Croydon to West Croydon is also faster on foot if you use the northern exit and consider that West Croydon tram stop/station is further away than the area of the town centre it serves.

What about Warrington Central to Warrington Bank Quay, Just under a mile to walk, 15 mins or so. Quickest Journey via Manchester Oxford Road just over an hour.

Isn't this the opposite of what the OP was looking for?
